Standing (2nd row): Carol Coslett, Joan Behm, Denise Culp, and Julie Schechter. o heater troupe fights ® student substance abuse The Improbable Players, a substance abuse prevention theater company, will perform at Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Science Building 101 on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at noon. The Players, all in recovery from alcohol and other abuse, have traveled across the U.S. since 1984 with poignant, humorous plays about substance abuse and its impact on people’s lives. Lynn Bratley, director, founded the troupe to use her theatrical skills to help people understand the problems of addiction. “We wanted to cre- atively address the phenome- non of substance abuse in a way that would combine our acting talents with our recov- ery,” she said. The mission of the Players is to make people aware that help is available. Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s cultural and performing arts events are free and open to the public. College fair offers aid information Luzerne County Community College and the Luzerne County Counselors Association will hold the 31st annual College Night and Financial Aid Information Night on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the College’s Campus Center. The program is sanctioned by the Pennsylvania Association of College Admissions Counseling (PACAC) as‘a regional fair. Representatives from more than 100 colleges, universities, hospitals, post-secondary tech- nical schools, and the armed services will be at the program to speak with prospective col- lege students and parents about career opportunities and admission requirements. Representatives from the col- lege’s financial aid office will be available to discuss federal and state financial aid pro- grams. The program is open to the public, free of charge. Gate of Heaven accepts donation of books from Ireland Jack Callahan, a member of the Gate of Heaven Parish group who toured Ireland recently, purchased books in Ireland and donated them to the Gate of Heaven school library. The books donated are Great Irish Heroes, by Fiona Waters; and Look: Body Language in Art, by Gillian Wolfe. The Rev. Lehman-Jackson PTA begins annual membership drive The Lehman-Jackson PTA recently kicked off its annual membership drive with awarding a prize to the winner of this year's PTA Calendar Cover Contest, Callie Grey. Callie's artwork was picked from a contest held in May that was open to fourth and fifth grade students. The students were asked to design the cover for the 2004-2005 PTA School Calendar using the theme “Every Child". The PTA is asking for the help of all parents, teachers, caregivers, and other family members and friends to support the school and become a member during the membership fund drive that is currently taking place.
