Davd was born on May 8, 1936, n Elizabeth, N.J., son of the lte Neil F. and Helen Mintor Payne. He attended St. Peters Preparatory School and St. Peer’s College, Jersey City, - N.J. aid received a bachelor of sciene in English from St. Pe- ters College. He received his maste of arts in English litera- ture fom Seton Hall Universi- ty, Saith Orange, N.J., and at- tendel New York University for doctcal studies. He was a memier of Our Lady of Victory, Harveys Lake. David also servd as chairman of the Eng- lish department, chairman of the humanities division, direc- tor admissions, dean of ad- misions and financial aid, charman of the faculty senate, and on many other academic andadministrative committees. He was active in many campus ministry projects. Dave de- voted 13 consecutive spring breaks to this endeavor. Most recently, Dave was bestowed the rank of professor emeritus at College Misericordia. Dave was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He enjoyed spending his time at Harveys Lake with his wife, Andrea, working in his veg- etable and flower gardens, and giving his grandchildren diving lessons on the dock. When he wasn’t at home working on his property he spent his time on unannounced excursions with his grandchildren, such as rum- maging through used book- stores, trips to Lancaster and to plays. He also loved playing 18 holes with his son and Wednes- day golf buddies. Surviving are his wife, An- drea, with whom he celebrated 44 years of marriage on Sept. 10, 2004; daughter and son-in- law Allison and James Derrick- son, Spokane, Wash; daughter and son-in-law Ellen and Lynn McLaughlin, Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, David and Dar- lene Payne, Kingston Town- ship; daughter, Catherine Payne, Harveys Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gary Ferentino, Harveys Lake. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Graham and Andrew Derrickson; Deirdre, Brianna, and Aidan McLaughlin; and David, Sarah, and Jillian Payne. He is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Conway, Centerville, Mass.; Mary Ellen Seyer, Oxford, N.C.; Alicia Ellegood, Melbourne, Fla., and several nieces and nephews with whom he was very close. CHARLES DEITZ Loved his family and the outdoors Devoted husband and father, Charles (Charlie) R. Deitz, of Dallas, died September 21, 2004 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township. Born and raised in Swoy- ersville, he was a 1953 gradu- ate of the former Swoyersville High School. He was the son of the late Charles E. and Mary (Wisdo) Deitz. Mr. Deitz was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1954- 1957. He retired from ALTEC Industries, where he was em- ployed as a union assembly man. Earlier in his life, Charlie en- joyed traveling with his wife and family to the tri-state area to race competition motorcy- cle. In his later years he en- joyed bowling in various leagues throughout the Back Mountain and Exeter. Charlie’s love for cama- raderie and competition spread to his trapshooting, his love of the outdoors, and hunt- ing at his cabin. As a member of the steel workers union, he was a senior member of their grievance committee and a member of the Sunshine Club. He was preceded in death by : his sister, Leatrice Myers. Surviving is his wife, the for- mer Mary Ann Krehely with whom he would have celebrat- ed their 45th wedding anniver- sary on Oct. 15; sons, Charles J., Shavertown; John P., of Cen- ter Moreland; Joseph M. of Asheboro, N.C.; and Robert A. Main St. Wilkes-Barre PA 18711 LEONARD ROOTE U.S. Navy veteran Leonard W. “Bud” Roote, of Keelersburg Road, Tunkhan- nock, died Sept. 16, 2004, at the Mercy Hospital in Wilkes- Barre. : He was born in West Wyoming on March 8, 1941, son of the late Richard B. and Rose (Ostrowski) Roote; and step-son of the late Madelyn (Baranski) Roote. He was a 1959 graduate of Tunkhannock High School. He was a 20-year Navy veteran, re- tiring in 1979 as a Chief Offi- cer. While serving in the U.S. Navy, he was a parachute in- structor receiving the Para- chute Instructor of the Year Award in 1978. He had been employed over the years by Linde Construc- tion, Marvel Kitchens and Dupont Construction. He was a member of the Black Walnut American Legion Post, South Mountain Land Association, Beards for Better Bucks Hunt- ing Club and the Harvey's Lake Rod and Gun Club. Shakalum, age 87, a resident of Eaton Township, Wyoming County, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Sept. 15, 2004, in East Moun- tain Manor, Plains Township, where she had been a guest since November 2003. Mrs. Shakalum was born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late Leslie H. and Maude Thomas, and was a graduate of Elmer L. Meyers High School, Wilkes-Barre. She was a sales clerk at the Boston Store, Wilkes-Barre, for several years, and, prior to her retirement in 1982, she had been a medical claims clerk with the Wilkes- Barre District of the Interna- tional Ladies Garment Work- ers’ Union for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Shakalum in 1981; and was a former member of the Firwood United Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre. Surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
