‘AA we ¥ Gearing up for a run at states The Dallas High School boys soccer team hopes to avoid the letdown it suffered at the end of last season when the Moun- taineers were stunned in the first round of district play by an underdog Nanticoke team. An undefeated regular season and league championship ended in bitter disappointment. Veteran head coach Chris Ed DALLAS SOCCER Scharff thinks this year’s team can learn from that experience. “I think we might have gone into that game a bit overconfi- dent,” said Scharff. “These kids seem hungry and are focused on keeping the winning tradition alive at Dallas. They don’t want to experience that feeling ~ again.” For Scharff and his team, the goals remain the same. “We ex- pect to contend for the league ti- tle, go to districts and qualify for the state tournament.” Despite losing the top two scorers from a year ago, Scharff From left, first row: Matthew Glicini, Adam Besecker, Ryan Gilroy, Mike Haines, Billy Barnes. That should make us more dan- gerous.” . Among the returnees are jun- ior goalkeeper Ryan Gilroy, sen- ior sweeper Ryan Murray, senior back Ryan Marascio and sopho- more midfielder Billy DeAngelo. “These four players are all re- turning starters and give us a solid nucleus,” said Scharff. “We have several other players who saw quality minutes last year.” Overall, Scharff has been im- pressed with his team during the pre-season. “We've looked pretty good,” he said. “We have a lot of experience and are play- ing with a great deal of maturi- ty.” ~The Mountaineers will be travel to Back Mountain rival Lake-Lehman on Sept. 9. — by Chris Bell “The Back Mountain's Favorite Pizza & Family Dining Restaurant Since 1953” * Private Party Rooms For All Occasions * Kids’ Menu w/99¢ Kids’ meals every Sunday * Daily Lunch Specials Check out Our New Delivery/Take Out Combos 2004 Dallas Cross Country Wed.
