Joanna Smith attends business forum Joanna Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Smith of Shavertown, attended the Fu- ture Busi- ness Lead- ers of Amer- ica National Leadership Conference on July 12- 15 in Den- ver. At the conference, Joanna will compete in the impromptu speaking event, and will serve as a conference delegate. A high-honor roll student at Bishop O'Reilly High School, Joanna Smith Kingston, she has many inter- ests and is involved: in many school activities. . Aside from being a member of the FBLA for three years, she is also a member of the school’s foren- sics team (with which she qual- ified twice in state and three times in national competition). In addition, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Glee Club, Chamber Choir, Folk Group, school newspaper, and school musical. This year, she participated in the PMEA District 9 Chorus Festival and the Region 4 All-State Chorus Festival. Moreover, she has been nominated as a Diocesan Scholar, for the National Stu- dent Youth Leadership Confer- ence, and has been named to Who's Who in American High School Students. Exchange student visits German foreign exchange student Mia Dupre recently visit- ed Mrs. Ellen Boyer's German classes at the Dallas Middle School and Dallas High School. Mia was introduced by her cousins John Prater, a seventh grader at the middle school, and Brittany Prater, a tenth grade high school student. During her visits to the classes, Mia explained the differ- ences between the German and American educational sys- tems and teenage life in Germany and America. Students in eighth grade science classes participated in the fair. They competed in the areas of life, physical, environmental and behavioral sciences. There were over 200 projects entered into the science fair. The projects were judged on many aspects: creativity, originali- ty, data collection, conclusion, written, oral, and visual pres- entation. The projects were evaluated by volunteer judges. The judges were professors from the local colleges, Dallas science faculty members and administrators. Winners were announced at an evening award ceremony.
