| & Sunday, July 4, 2004 Tue POST 11 Church & Comm PAST OR’S CORNER By Fr. Peter Crynes St. Therese’s Catholic Church Some words to consider on Independence Day weekend | & The arrival of this weekend signals the high point of the summer for so many of us. Yet, each person seems to ap- proach it in a different man- ner. There are those who will say, “Well, summer’s half over,” or “Well, the summer’s over already.” There are oth- ers who can hardly wait for that extra day off when finally they can get to all those things that have been piling up. Oth- ers find this a wonderful op- portunity to engage in some activity, which usually holds great anticipation for the holi- day. All of us look forward to one or more of the great fire- works displays that dot the horizon. It seems that the approach we take has a lot to do with the manner and style of our personality. Are we doers, fix- ers, enjoyers, “half-over” peo- ple, or “can hardly find enough time to fit it all in peo- ple?” Yet, no matter our style, this mid-summer break is a terrific time for all of us to find the space to be apprecia- tive of the freedoms that are ours. Might I suggest we med- itate on a portion of the fire- side chat of Franklin Roosevelt delivered on January 6, 1941, and consider its relevance for us and for the people of Iraq at this time, “In the future days which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world found- éd upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression - every- where in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his (or her) own way - everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want, which, translated into world terms, means &conomic understandings, which will se- cure to every nation a healthy peace time life for its inhabi- tants - everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world- wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no na- tion will be in a position to commit an act of physical ag- gression against any neighbor - anywhere in the world. That is no vision of a distant millennium, it is a definite ba- sis for a kind of world unat- tainable in our own time and generation... To that new order we op- pose the greater conception - the moral order. ...The world order, which we seek, is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society. This nation has placed its destiny in the hands, heads and hearts of its millions of free men and women, and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means the supremacy of hu- man rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights and keep them. Our strength is our unity of purpose. To that high concept there can be no end save victory.” BMT Ministerium summer Bible Study A community Bible Study sponsored by the Back Mountain Ministerium will be held every Wednesday through August 11 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Dallas. The study will meet at noon and 7 p.m. and will cover the Book of Acts, led by a different pastor each week (same lesson at each time). Atten- dance every week is not necessary and dress is summer casual. Noon attendees may wish to bring a bag lunch. For more information contact Rev.
