& Trail The Post COMMUNITY Sunday, June 6, 2004 9 (continued from page 1) neighbors.” The association is currently in negotiations to complete what would be an eight-mile trail from the fire hall in Luzerne to College Misericor- dia in Dallas. Though much work is still to be done, the trail is already widely used by hikers, bikers and anyone just out for a leisurely walk in the woods. “The everyday trail users seem to be older, active peo- ple,” said Albrecht. “They are very respectful and apprecia- tive of the trail.” That appreciation has mate- rialized into two new additions, a kiosk, erected by Jacob Ko- valchik and Dan Namarascio, members of the junior class of Dallas High School, and a bench that was made by Eagle Scout Neil Bellanca, in memo- ry of Ed Kupstas Jr., who died in an automobile accident in 1999. The hardest part of the proj- ect, says Albrecht, is that the land that could link the trail to- gether is owned by many differ- ent people. ASTA has $480,000 available in federal highway construction funds, but cannot get the mon- ey until the organization can show a continuous trail. “We need to prove to our very loyal businesses and indi- viduals that we are working hard,” said Albrecht, “Were making some progress in diffi- cult areas.” The organization would also like to install five access gates for emergency, maintenance and security personnel. “It’s telling people that unau- thorized motor vehicles are not allowed,” said Judy Rimple, president of the ASTA Board of Directors of the gates. “There are trail rules that are given and have to be followed.” Access to the trail is available at a couple locations: the park- ing lot at the Knights of Columbus in Luzerne, barring any major functions, and at the Dallas Area Municipal Authori- ty along Route 309, at the north end of the lot, by the re- cycling sign. There are signs up for safety, directions on the trail and a trail map is in the works, which would make navigating and finding the access points even easier. For more information on the trail, or to be a “trail tender” volunteer, call Mark Albrecht at 696-3409 or Judy Rimple at 675-9016. This walkway protects hikers and bikers from Route 309 traf- fic when they make their way to Harris Hill Road on the newest stretch of the Back Mountain Trail. ® Hasay challenger gains ballot spot Staff report Hunlock Township resident Nate Sorber declared victory Wednesday as the Democratic contender for the 117th district's seat for state representative, pitting him against incumbent Repub- lican George Hasay Jr. this fall. Sorber accepted his victory after Wednesday’s Luzerne County Election Board meeting, when it was determined he received at least 383 write-in votes in Luzerne County during the May pri- mary election. The board agreed Wednesday to credit different variations of Sorber’s name — including Nathan, Nate and Nat — to his total. Sorber needed at least 300 votes to get on the ballot. He also re- ceived additional votes in Wyoming and Columbia counties. A 1998 graduate of Northwest High School, the 24-year-old Sor- ber has a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s de- gree in higher education.
