Spencer’s hitting, though, was matched by his serving in game two. He served 10 consecutive points, in- cluding five aces, as Hoban had trou- ble returning the ball, which would dip down and away viciously. “It’s just a jump serve,” Spencer said. “If you hit it right, that’s what it’s suppose to do.” “Spencer's final point gave Lehman a 17-5 lead. Hoban put a rally attempt together and cut the deficit to 22-16 before falling. “We never lost control really. We al- ways thought we had that game,” said Lehman setter Kenny David, who celebrated his 17th birthday with a match-high 35 assists. “We re- ally thought we had the first game as well, but we made a few mental er- rors. We had confidence in our- selves.” Hoban led the fourth game 9-8 be- fore Lehman's Steve Ide tied the score with a block and Craig Thomas put the Black Knights ahead for good with an ace. Thomas scored 11 points and seven kills in the match. David and Pat McMahon combined for an outstanding defensive play to increase Lehman’s game-four lead to 19-11. McMahon made a lunging save that ricocheted off David and back to McMahon, who returned it to Hoban. It led to an errant Hoban hit. “The kids hung in there,” Bara- nowski said. “They had me scared in the second game when we had a deficit that we managed to overcome. They relied on their poise. The Dallas Middle School Girls Track and Field Team concluded an undefeated season with a win at the PIAA District II Jr. High Track Meet, held on May 15 in Hanover. More than 40 schools competed in the combined AA and AAA meet. The Dallas girls qualified a total of 17 girls for the district meet. Gold medal performances were turned in by Paige Selenski in the 400 meter dash, Stephanie Ashley in the javelin (setting a new meet record), and the 1600 meter relay team of Kelci Gibbons, Lauren Zimnisky, Sammi Elston, and Paige Selenski. Lindsey Davenport took home a silver medal in javelin. Kelci Gibbons won bronze in the 400 meter dash and the high jump. Fourth place medals were won by Mariel Adams in the 1600 meter run, and Erin Delaney in the triple jump. Fifth place medalists were Lauren Zimnisky in the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter relay team of Kelci Gibbons, Lyndsay El- lis, Erin Delaney, and Paige Selens- ki. > The girls scored 61 points, 11 better than runner-up Valley View. On the boys side, Dallas qualified 14th for the district meet. Adam Tamanini won a second place medal in discus and Doug Harding took home a bronze in the javelin. State Track & Field Four state medals for Dallas, Lehman track athletes Lake-Lehman junior Brandon Burkhardt won two bronze medals at the PIAA Class 2A Track and Field Champi- onships, held May 2829 at Shippens- burg University. Burkhardt finished third in both the javelin and discus throws. His javelin throw of 188-3 was just short of his dis- trict-winning 192-10. The winner, Chad Radgowski of South Park High School, smashed the state record by 12 feet with a throw of 207-2. In discus, Burkhardt was hampered by the PIAA-mandated disc, throwing 149- 5, about 10 feet less than his second- place throw at districts. Rebekah Williams, a Lake-Lehman freshman, won the fourth-place medal in the high jump with a leap of 54. In Class 3A, Dallas sophomore Lisa Giacometti finished fourth in the 3200- meter run. The 20th-place finisher last year, Giacometti fought her way back from 10th at the halfway mark. The Dallas 3200 relay team of Jamie Stanish, Whitney Adams, Jessica Jones and Kenslie Kerestes placed sixth. Gia- cometti normally runs the anchor leg of the team, but competed only in the indi- vidual event, which was held the same day. FOR THE POST/FRED ADAMS Lisa Giacometti won fourth place at the PIAA Class 3A Track and Field Championships, held May 28-29 at Shippensburg University. : State tennis championships Andrusisian, partner lose in quarters The Scranton Prep doubles team of John Nespoli and Greg Andrusisian, of Dallas, won its first round match, then lost in the quarterfinals at the Class 2A state tennis championships, held May 28-29 at the Sarni Tennis Center on the campus of Penn State University. After winning 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, the partners lost a 6-4, 6-4 match to the eventual third-place team of Trevor Heck and Evan Steigel of Sewickley Academy. Liz Byron selected for Academic All-Star squad Liz Byron, of Dallas has been named to the College Sports Information Di- rectors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District I At-Large Team. A sophomore swimmer, Byron was named to the first team. An elementary education major, she helped the women’s swim team to an ECAC Cham- pionship and a 10-2-1 dual-meet record. She owns four school records (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle re- lay, and 200 freestyle relay) and was chosen as the Class of 2006 Outstand- ing Student-Athlete at Boston College. Results of voting for the national at- large squad will be announced June 15.
