The event will take place April 29, beginning at 11 a.m, at the Appletree Terrace, Newberry Estate, Dallas. The speaker this year is Dallas na- tive Melanie Maslow Lumia, editor of “Got Verse,” an an- thology of Valley Poetry. Ms. Lumia collects works that speak of “what it is to be human and to live here in this time and this place.” Her in- volvement with the Tudor Po- etry Reading Series lead her to edit “Got Verse” because she believes that we are surround- ed by talented people in North- eastern Pennsylvania who mas- querade as waitresses, stu- dents, landscapers, firefighters and even a federal judge. “Got Verse” validates the growing interest in culture in our re- gion. The event begins at 11 a.m and lunch will be served at 11:45. The cost is $20, with all proceeds going to benefit the library. Poetry contest winners will be announced, prizes will be awarded, and a raffle will take place. Tables of eight are encouraged and may be re- served. Checks made payable to the Back Mountain Memori- al Library must be received in the library by April 19. Food drive bounty Wine tasting workshop at Penn State Wilkes-Barre ¢ Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Continuing Education depart- ment will offer a wine tasting workshop on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m., start- ing April 7. The workshop will introduce a variety of wines from California, Italy, France, and Australia. Taste samples will be served with cheese, fruit, and bread. Through comparison tasting, instructor Dick Murphy will lead participants in distinguish- ing characteristics of different categories of wine. Other top- ics will include the physiology of smell and taste, letting bot- tles breathe, serving tempera- tures, food matchups, and how to recognize quality wines. OBITUARIES GLENN SICKLER MURIEL ELIZABETH Owned Sickler’s Store in Carverton SHERMAN Glenn Sickler, 90, died for these two companies. He Former Tunkhannock March 14, 2004, at Bonham was a member of Norland Unit- Borough tax collector Nursing Center, where he had resided since October 1997. He was born in Sutton Creek, Pa., on July 27, 1913, the son of the late John and Ursa Wall Sickler. At the age of 4, Glenn, his siblings (sisters, Mary Emmanuel; brothers, Channing and Brice) and par- ents moved to Orange, Pa., where they operated the Gen- eral Store for many years. He was a graduate of Kingston Township High School, Trucksville and a member of Orange Methodist Church. On Aug. 18, 1934, he mar- ried Naomi Austin of Parsons and began a loving marriage which lasted 51 years until her death in October 1985. In 1940, he built a home and store in Carverton and moved the family there. In 1943 he en- listed in the Navy “Sea-bees.” Using his construction skills, he served mostly in the Philip- pines until the end of WWII in 1945. Glenn then re-opened Sickler’s Store and took an ac- tive role in the life of his com- munity. He was a member of Carverton United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge of Wyoming and also built numer- ous homes in the area. Muriel Sherman, 86, of Sec- ond Street, Tunkhannock, died March 30, 2004 at Tyler Memorial Hospital. She was born in Luzerne on April 29, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Clifford and Audrey (Denman) Eustice. She was tax collector for the borough of Tunkhannock and was of the Methodist faith. She is survived by two sons, Robert Sherman, North Eaton; Stephen A. Sherman, Scran- ton; one sister, Marion Shaw, Montrose. She was preceded in death by her sister, Irene Solanick.
