10 The Post SCHOOL Sunday, April 4, 2004 Gate of Heaven School 10th forensic competition Gate of Heaven School held its Tenth Forensic Competition, under the direction of Mrs. Anne Marie Lohin, on Feb. 20 in the school gymnasium. On the Varsity level (Grades 7-8), the following students merited First Place: Melissa Rukstalis, Matthew Ruch, and Lauren Weaver (Life Raft by Joe Mc- Cabe); Second Place: Zachary Wallick and Samantha Condo; Third Place: Laurie Shevock and Abbey Zurad, and Honor- able Mention: Megan Millo and Emily Griswold. On the Junior Varsity level (Grades 5-6), First Place went to Stephen Ruch, Nathan Al- brecht, and Austin Carr (Toyshop Evolution by Greg Brook); Second Place: Daniel Kopicki, Adam (A.J.) Limongel- li, and John McCarthy; Third Place: AnnMarie Wempa, Bri- anna LaFoca, and Caila Sherin, and Honorable Mention: There- sa Restaino and Jill Cawley. On the “Four-ensic” level, the following students earned First Place: Rachel Simon and Kirby Smith (Miss Grasshopper, Miss Ant and Mr. Cricket by Rachel Field); Second Place: Christo- pher Boland and Michael Ba- nas; Third Place: Olivia Zurad, Ariana Brennan, Erin Williams, and Lindsey Stainer, and Hon- orable Mention: Megan Grabowski, Elizabeth Farrell, and Devin Phillips. : A total of 23 groups of stu- dents competed in this year’s Forensics. Students were judged on memorization (fluen- cy), pacing, gestures, character- ization, interpretation of liter- ary work, voice control (articu- lation, volume, and enuncia- tion), and general effectiveness. Sem student award winners Students from Wyoming Seminary Upper and Lower Schools were recently honored for their artwork in the Suzanne Maria Rossetti Memorial Juried Art Contest, sponsored by Joe and Sue Hand of Dallas, in memory of the daughter of Louise and the late Peter Rossetti of Saugus, MA. Derek Kopen, Shavertown, received three first place awards on his three entries as well as the Mertie Larish Memorial Award, Best of 7th Grade, Award for Triple Blue Society, and the Award for Promising Future. Kaytlin Kopen received the Best of 9th Grade, Award for Triple Blue Society, Award for Sports Art and the Award for Dramatic Lighting. Gate of Heaven students take home PJAS awards Gate of Heaven School in Dallas won The Award for the Small School with Highest Percentage of First Awards — 100 percent — at the annual Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition at King’s College on Feb. 28. It was the third time in three years that GOH has won this award, and the second time in three years with 100 percent. PJAS is open to students from grades seven through 12. Using the scientific method, students hypothesize, design and run an experiment, collect data, analyze and draw conclu- sions. They present the sci- ence project and results in a 10-minute presentation to a team of judges who rate the students first, second, or third. This year over 600 stu- dents from 56 schools from Region 2 participated. Fourteen Gate of Heaven students competed in PJAS and all garnered first place. Projects with stains and stain removers included seventh graders Conor Harrington, Serena Fulton, Abbey Zurad ‘Local students achieve and eighth graders Lauren Blanc, Carl Peterlin, and Katie Banas. CM nursing program accredited College Misericordia’s nursing department recently received accreditation for 10 years from the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education (CCNE). After a self-study report and a site visit, the nursing program received accreditation with no recom- mendations, the highest level of accreditation. The accredita- tion will be in effect until 2013.
