Caroline Byron logs fastest- ever 50 free From staff reports Bishop Hoban junior Caroline By- ron won the 50 freestyle in record time on the opening day of the Dis- trict 2 Class 2A Swimming Champi- onships. Byron won in 23.52 sec- onds, breaking the meet record of 24.13 set by Kristin Stretanski of Wyoming Valley West in 1992. It was the fastest time ever recorded by an area high school swimmer in a district or state meet. “I wasn’t really expecting that,” Byron said. “It hasn’t sunk in yet, but I'm really excited.” On the second day of the event, Byron broke the meet record in the 100-yard freestyle that was previ- ously held by her older sister Liz, now a sophomore at Boston Col- lege. Caroline opened the competition on Saturday by winning in 51.47 seconds, breaking the mark of 52.41 that Liz had set in 2002. “Im really happy we're keeping the record in the family,” Caroline Byron said. “I don’t think my sister would want anybody else to break it. I know she’s happy for me. I think it was more exciting for me because it was my sister’s record.” Byron also anchored Hoban’s winning 400 freestyle relay team that included senior Julie McLaughlin and juniors Julie Grilz .and Bryn Mesko. Byron picked up a silver in her other event, the 200 freestyle relay, held Friday. The top two finishers in each event at the District 2 meet auto- matically qualified for the PIAA State Championship meet on March 12 and 13 at Penn State’s main campus. Byron won four state medals last year for top-six finishes, and has a great chance to bring home gold this year. In both the 50 and 100 freestyle, her time from this year’s district meet is significantly better than the winning time at last year’s PIAA Class 2A meet. She'll head to states Next up PIAA State Championship March 12-13 Penn State’s main campus Caroline Byron won four medals last year, and is swimming at a pace well below last year’s win- ning times in the 50 and 100 freestyle almost one second faster than last year’s winning time in the 100 freestyle, which was 52.39. Byron's winning time in the 50 freestyle on Friday was 23.52, and the winning time at last year’s 2A state meet was 24.29. “I always go down to states hop- ing for gold,” said Byron, who won silver in the 50 freestyle and bronze in the 100 freestyle last year. “Hav- ing the times that I do have makes me more confident.” PTT FOR THE POST/MADALYN RUGGIERO Bishop Hoban junior Caroline Byron reacts after breaking the 50-yard freestyle record on Fri- day during the District 2 Class 2A swimming championships at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center.
