The Northwest offense produced just enough behind a 26-point per- formance by tournament MVP Vince Scalzo. The defense made key stops in the third and fourth quarters to keep Dallas from fulfilling two rallies. After Dallas whittled a 37-25 half- time deficit down to 42-35 with just under three minutes left in the third Jesse Miller plucked a defensive rebound over a Dallas player, leading to a three-point basket by Nick Buerger. In less than two minutes, the defense helped the quarter, Northwest's Rangers go on a 7-0 run. The Rangers offense managed just two field goals in the fourth quarter, but down the stretch the defense stiff- ened and it led to several free throws ®- end another Dallas threat. Muniey Tournament FOR THE POST/AIMEE DILGER Bishop O’Reilly’s Matt Flanagan passed out of a tight spot during the Munley Tour- nament championship game. Crossin‘clinic’leads O’Reilly Staff report WRIGHT TWP. — Bish- op O'Reilly's Tim Crossin put on a shooting clinic Tuesday night, leading the Queensmen to an easy 70-41 victory over Crestwood in the championship game of the Munley Tournament. The 6-foot-1 junior guard poured in a game-high 32 points — scoring from every- where imaginable — and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player. It marked the second time in four days the Queensmen KO'd the Comets. The prior Saturday, O'Reilly posted a 55-44 win on the Queens- men’s home court. “It’s tough to beat a good team like Crestwood twice in such a short period of time, but we were up to the task,” Crossin said. Bishop O’Reilly’s victory Tuesday foiled Crestwood’s bid to win the Munley Tour- nament for the seventh con- secutive year. The Comets had won 13 straight games in Munley Tournament play. Perhaps the most remark- able aspect of Crossin’s per- formance is that he was rela- tively quiet in the first quar- ter, scoring just five points. Teammate Matt Flanagan took center stage in the early going. Flanagan poured in 14 points in the opening period as O'Reilly (11-1) shot out to a 19-6 lead. Crossin took charge of the game in the second quarter. He stretched the lead to 21-8 on a basket with 7:18 left in the half. The Comets drew to within 23-16, but O'Reilly widened the gap to 29-16 when Crossin made a steal and turned it into a three- point play. The Comets got within 34- 23 with 7:16 remaining in the third period. “We knew they were going to make a run in the second half,” Crossin said. “They did, and I had to kind of get us going.” Crossin single-handedly kept Crestwood (7-4) at bay the remainder of the quarter, scoring nearly every time he touched the ball — including an eye-catching turnaround 12-foot jumper with two de- fenders draped over him. The fourth quarter be- came the Tim Crossin Show. He opened the stanza with a trey, and Flanagan followed with a three-point bomb to extend the lead to 52-36. Then Crossin finished off the Comets by hitting an NBA-range trey, and made a steal and a layup, putting Crestwood into a 59-38 hole with 3:45 left. Crossin said Bishop O'Reilly is on a roll. “We're starting to climb the moun- tain.” Tunkhannock captured third-place, defeating Seton Catholic, 72-58, behind Kyle Wilson's 22 points. Crossin was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Flanagan and Josh Aciukewicz, and Tunkhannock’s Wilson. Wrestling Dragon and Schutz win at Tunkhannock Staff report TUNKHANNOCK = — Lake- Lehman had a pair of titlists in Jere- my Schutz (135) and Matt Dragon (145) at the 26th annual Tunkhan- nock Kiwanis Wrestling Tournament on Tuesday. Schutz earned the tour- nament award for most pins in least time (four in 5:23). Andy Josuweit was runner-up at 140, losing a wild decision to Pittston Area’s Phil Dunn. Dunn scored two first-period take- downs to stake a 4-2 lead. Dunn start- ed the second on bottom and scored a reversal at the 1:48 mark, but seven seconds later, Josuweit hit a reversal of his own. Before the match was over, they'd exchange two more reversals each, with Josuweit landing the final one with 17 seconds remaining in the third to draw within 10-9. Josuweit put pressure on Dunn’s head and neck but couldn’t get him turned and that’s how it ended. Schutz faced a familiar foe in the fi- nal, Western Wayne's Dan Vogel. Schutz pinned him in the finals of the Times Leader Invitational on Dec. 20. Dragon got a measure of revenge against Pittston Area’s Steve Barber, who pinned the Black Knight two years ago in a dual meet the Patriots won. Dragon was in control the whole way, earning the technical fall in 4:07 (15-0). DYB 7-8 Boys Pompey Dodge 49, Renaissance Center 46 Pompey was led by Doug Harding, Tommy Youells and D.J.
