Knights lead WVC | squads By JOE PETRUCCI For The Post Back Mountain well represented in Killer Bees semis Staff Report Three student-athletes from the Back Mountain have been named semifinalists for the Killer Bees Athletic Club’s Joe Hoinski Memorial Awards for Excellence in Athletics. The club recently named 32 semifinalists, eight in each of four divisions, from nominations it received from the public and members of its selection com- mittee. The names and accomplishments of the eight semifinalists in open male, open female, scholastic male and scholastic female will be placed on ballots and distributed to members of a voting committee. The results of the balloting will deter- mine the three finalists and the winner in each divi- sion. The finalists in each division will be invited to the club’s award banquet, where the winner will be an- nounced. The banquet is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 31 at Genetti Hotel & Convention Center in Wilkes-Barre, The Hoinski Awards, given to the area’s top ama- teur athletes, are named in honor of a club member who was killed in a motorcycle accident. The club also hands out student-athlete and Board of Gover- nor awards at its banquet. The student athlete semi- finalists and Board of Governor winners will be an- nounced at a later date. Open Divisions This year the Open Division was modified to in- clude all student-athletes who compete at area col- leges. Previously, only area residents were consid- ered. Penn State soccer standout David Walters, a Lake-Lehman graduate, was on the list for the Open Male division. Walters won the award last year. Willie Chandler, a record-setting scorer for the College Misericordia men’s basketball team, is also eligible for the Open Male award. Scholastic Divisions The scholastic male semifinalists include Rich Eckman, an all-state soccer player for Lake-Lehman. Lisa Giacometti, who led the Dallas cross country team to a state title, is a scholastic female semifinal- ist. : DALLAS TWP. — Lake-Lehman was the top Wyoming Valley Confer- ‘ence team, placing sixth (140.5) at the Times Leader Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Scholastic Roundup GIRLS BASKETBALL Dallas 69, Pittston Area 43 Dec. 22 — Leading by a point at halftime, Dallas turned on the pres- sure and outscored Pittston 34-17 in the second half. Meredith Lacey led the Lady Mounts with 15 points, Rosalyn Wentko added 14, and Shannon Thomas put in 12. The Lady Mounts hit seven 3-point shots, three by Lacey, two for Ash- leigh King and one each for Thomas and Cory Patton. Tunkhannock 46, Lake-Lehman 39 Dec. 22 — Jamie Morrison scored 11 points and teammate Alissa, McMickens added nine to lead Tunkhannock over Lake- Lehman. Sheree Horvath scored a game- high 13 points for. the Black Knights. Jill Chocallo scored nine points and Savannah Coombs had eight. Bishop O’Reilly 61, Hanover Area 25 Dec. 22 — O'Reilly jumped out to a 21-5 lead after one quarter and cruised past Hanover. Hazleton 67, Dallas 43 Dec. 18 — Hazleton Area’s Jenna Palumbo dropped in a school record eight three-pointers as the Cougars cruised to a surprisingly easy 67-43 victory December 18 over previously undefeated Dallas in a Wyoming Valley Conference girls basketball game. Dallas led just once, when Jackie Hardwick hit a free throw for the game's first point. Shannon Thomas had 12 points and Cory Patton added 11 for Dal- las. Patton canned three 3-point shots. Tunkhannock 62, Crestwood 57 Dec. 18 — Jessica Wildrick and Alissa McMickens each scored 16 points to lead Tunkhannock. Krista Flaherty added 12 points for the Tigers.
