Eric Martin has been a Rotar- ian for 12 years and is the re- cent past president of the Dal- las Club. “We grew up with Ro- tary,” he said. “The annual con- ference was the highlight of our year as kids. We were good all year just to make sure we all got to go. It was a rare treat as children to go on this trip to various places every spring. And we were exposed early on to the idea of giving back to the community and the world.” Eric Martin was an exchange student and his family often hosted exchange students in their home as well. Being a member of any group is one thing, but being its president is sometimes a lot different from what one would expect. “My year as president was a real eye opener for me,” said Eric Martin. “There are so many aspects to Rotary and Ro- tary International. The Rotary Foundation is far reaching and its programs have accom- plished such amazing objec- tives as helping to stamp out polio around the world in our lifetime.” Karen Martin, Eric Martin's “I feel especially privileged to have met so many dedicated people who are doing such great things in our community.” Karen Martin Rotary Club president wife, has been a Rotarian for three years and is the club’s president this year. “I feel espe- cially privileged to have met so many dedicated people who are doing such great things in our community,” she said. “We are from many different vocations, but we are all like-minded in our desire to roll up our sleeves and work as a team. For me it has been a growing experience, and I am doing things I never thought I was capable of do- ing.” While driving along the high- way, you may have spotted signs indicating that the Ro- tary, Lions or Kiwanis meet at a certain time and at a certain place. “Our Rotary sign is your open invitation to stop in and be our guest for our Thursday evening meeting at 6:30 p.m.,” said Karen Martin. “We'll give you more information on what Rotary is all about and the ways you can volunteer and get involved. If we're not there some evening, it’s because we are out cleaning up the high- way or setting up or cleaning up at the fair or the auction.” Karen Martin encourages couples, like herself and her husband, to join Rotary togeth- er. “So many times our activi- ties take us apart from one an- other. We have two couples in our Dallas Rotary Club who have made it a family affair.” ) South Main Street Shaveriowsi.
