Mounts nip Knights in freshman thriller After more than 50 plays - scrimmage and more than 400 yards in total offense, the freshman football game be- tween Dallas and Lake-Lehman was decided by one play and less than three feet. The Mountaineer defense stopped Lake-Lehman inside the 1l-yard line on a two-point conversion attempt with less than two minutes remaining as Dallas escaped with a thrilling 34-32 win last week at Edward H. Edwards Stadium in Lehman Township. The teams play in different divisions in the Wyoming Val- ley Conference junior high school league. The interdivi- sion, season-ending game was added so the teams could play under the lights in a ‘midweek contest. Greg Harris, Tommy Parrish, Robert Hayes and Greg Jerzak each recorded rushing touch- downs for Dallas, while Brad Fagula scored on a touchdown pass. Fagula also kicked a pair of extra points and Bruce Red- mond scored on a two-point conversion for the Moun- taineers. : Derek Shurmanek and Joe Taylor each scored twice for Lake-Lehman, including an 80- yard kickoff return by Shur- manek. Both of Taylor’s touch- downs came on passes from Shurmanek. Kevin Racemus scored on a 50-yard run and Mike Prater added a two-point conversion run for the Black Knights. Dallas finished with an over- all record of 55 and a 4-5 record in the WVC Division I. Lake-Lehman compiled a 6-3-1 overall mark and captured the WVC Division II regular season title with a 6-2-1 record. Dallas Middle School Cross Country team recently held its end of the season pizza party. The team finished with a win- ning record. The girls team, following in the footsteps of their high school counterpart, was undefeated, won the league championship, and finished second at their district meet. At the party, team captains Kasia Szulborski, Ally Evans, Eric Danko, and Dan Taroli were recognized. Awards for Most Valuable Runner were presented to Mariel Adams for the girls, and Eric Danko for the boys. Most Improved Runner awards went to Stephanie Goncezol for the girls, and Drew Clouse for the boys. The team is coached by Marjorie Adams of Dallas. DeCesaris named All-Tournament PHILADELPHIA- Temple senior Melissa DeCesaris, a Lake- Lehman graduate, was named to the 2003 Atlantic 10 All-Tourna- ment team. The Owls finished runner-up to the two-time defend- ing Atlantic 10 Conference champion #12 Richmond Spiders. DeCesaris recorded two goals in the tournament, including the game-winner in Temple's semifinal win over Saint Joseph's. The Owls completed the 2003 season with an 11-11 overall record and 4-2 in A-10 regular season conference play. They tied the Terminators from Mastic, NY, 1- 1, beat the Strikers from Macungie, PA, 4-0 and the Ambush from Berwyn, PA, 8-0. Tommy Youells scored eight goals, Shane Kitzmlller two goals, Jackie Ellis, Adam Fleisher and Joe Osick each scored once. Strong de- fense came from Andy Hughes, Russ Jenkins,Sean Dickin- son, Duncan Campbell and Jonathon Orlando along with goalkeepers Bobby Peron, Nick Latosek and Andy Besecker allowing only one goal in the three games. The Stampede also won the tournament over the Memorial Day weekend.
