12 Tue POST Sunday, October 5, 2003 Church & Community PASTOR'S CORNER Pastor Dennis Mediera New Life Community Church ‘Doing Good’ I am intrigued by words spoken by Albert Schweitzer. He said, “The fundamental idea of good is thus: that it consists in preserving life, in fa- voring it, in wanting to bring it to its highest value; and evil consists in destroying life, doing it injury, hindering its development.” The Bible says of Jesus, “You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about do- ing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” (Acts 10:38) There is a battle going on in our world today be- tween good and evil. While there are some who have evil intentions and will do anything to bring those intentions to fruition, there are many more that let evil triumph because they do not do good. Whether for perceived lack of time or ability, good deeds are not carried through, and so many are left in conditions of need or desperation because they do not have some one to come along side and help them live through their hard times. When the Lord God sent us His Son Jesus, He. put in motion a plan and ability that was His desire to do good to all mankind. The miracles Jesus per- formed, show us what was in the heart of God when He sent Jesus. Jesus healed a rich man’s son (John 4:46-54); He healed a lame man (John 5:1-9), He healed two blind men (Matthew 9:27-31), He fed 5000 people (John 6:5-13), and performed many other good deeds and miracles. Jesus said in John 4:34, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.” In John 14:10 he said, “The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.” Jesus helped people live through their hard times. And He did more than that. When He died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead and as- cended into heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit of God into the lives of those who believed He was God’s Messiah, that He had died on the cross in their place, for their sins. While that may not always make sense to us, it always makes sense to God. God continues His battle against evil today in the lives of those who believe in Jesus and go about doing good as Jesus did. These people speak kind words, they offer good wishes. Often times the good they do comes in the form of money or physi- cal help. They have a genuine care and love for oth- ers that show itself as they go out of their way to do good things for others. The English preacher Charles Haddon Spur- geon said, “Do all the good you can, to all the peo- ple you can, in all the ways you can, as often as ever you can, as long as you can.” Our world today would be enriched by more people going about do- ing good.
