12 Tue POST Sunday, October 19, 20) { Church & Community PASTOR'S CORNER By Pastor Dick Hawley High Point Church Developing your mission Recently, and for the third time, I read through Steve Covey’s book, “First Things First.” He uses four very familiar terms to capture principles of life in helping an individual develop his life mission. I want to use those same words but from a biblical-spiri- tual perspective. To LIVE. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus told us that our access to God and eternal life is through Him. He is the only way. We are to trust in Him alone for our eternal destiny. Jesus provides life itself as our creator God (Colossians 1:16-17) and He also provides eternal life. We can know that we have eternal life after this life because of what Jesus did on the cross for us (I John 5:11-12). Additionally, eternal life in Christ begins NOW, not in the distant future. God values every single soul that walks the earth today. He is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to re- pentance (2 Peter 3:9). In Romans 10 there is a wonderful prom- ise to everyone. It states, “for whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved (Romans 10:13).” | Once a person accepts Christ as their Savior and Lord they be- come a child of God. As God’s children, He values our happiness and makes provisions for us to experience joy like the world can- not know (John 15:11). Love life today by resting in your source of life, Jesus Christ. Relax and Enjoy! Enjoy! To LOVE. God desires that we love Him first and foremost. Je- sus said, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind (Matthew 22:37).” Loving God is expressed in many different ways. We show Him that we love Him through our worship, our giving, our prayers, our personal Bible study, our commitments to Him and obeying what He tells us. The second greatest commandment is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-40).” If we could simply get back to this simple action verb we would see our world transformed. Our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action (I John 3:18). The best expression of love is time. Time is your most precious gift because you only have a set amount of it. When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you'll never get back. Your time is your life and when you choose to share it with someone, you choose to give them a slice of your life. To LEARN. God actually commands us to grow spiritually. He wants us to develop an insatiable desire for learning His Word. I Peter 2:2 states it in this way, as newborn babies desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. Spiritual, emotional, relational and mental growth are good signs of health. Commit to learn something this week that will benefit you and others around you. God teaches us through His Word, circumstances, Godly mentors, Pastors, Bible teachers, spiritually-minded friends and other means. Look for the lesson in your trial and you will be amazed at your response to the situation at hand. To LEAVE A LEGACY. Leave a legacy by living a life that’s ex- emplary before God, friends and family. When you get into the habit of making decisions based on the truth of God’s Word, your life will begin to take on Christ-like character. When Christ-like character permeates your life, you will positively affect everyone that comes into your life. You will, over the course of time, begin to leave a legacy that will last forever. Bill Summerhill, chaplain and Acade- mic Dean at , Wyoming Seminary, was the guest speak- er at Shavertown United Methodist Church. The church gave thanks for the gift of the land do- nated to the church by Theron Ferguson in 1903. In an old- fashioned tent serv- be ice Rev. Summerhill rortrared Mr. Theron F erguson in a dramatic message. The service featured a large procession, the chancel and bell choirs and a service of rededication of the land. An outdoor reception and time of fellowship followed. Pictured, from left: Rev. Doug Clark, Rev. Bill Summerhill, and the Rev. Janet Clark.
