It is sponsored by PENNDOT District 4, which includes Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties. The symposium is an oppor- tunity for experienced trail sponsors and potential trail sponsors to get together and share ideas for building, fund- ing and maintaining trails for hikers and bikers. Representatives from PEN- NDOT, the Rails to Trails Con- servancy and the state Depart- ment of Conservation and Nat- ural Resources (DCNR) will present ideas for trail plan- ning, design, and funding. Also, experienced trail spon- sors will present updates on existing projects. Anyone is welcome to attend the symposium, but reserva- tions are required. EVANS Member of Boritin Shavert St. Therese’s Church OI In Shaver town On September 17, 2003 Bernadine E. Winiecki, Shaver- town passed away at Wilkes- Barre General Hospital. Born May 3, 1927, to the late Stanley and Mildred (Katchko) Shultz, she attended Swoy- ersville High School and worked in the garment industry for many years. She was a de- vout Catholic and belonged to St. Theresa’s Church, Shaver- town. She was a member of the Dallas Senior Citizens Center where she was an avid shuffle board player. She was preceded in death by her brother Stanley Shultz and sister Patricia Emershaw both of Swoyersville. She was a loving mother and kind to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Bernice Kachmar, son-in-law Andrew Kachmar, of Larksville, sister-in-law Roseann Shultz, Swoyersville and loving friend June Shook, Larksville. JUNIOR SEARFOSS U.S. Army veteran of World War II Junior E. Searfoss, 85, of Syl- van Lake, died Saturday Sep- tember 20, 2003 at the General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Born June 16, 1918 in Wilkes-Barre, he graduated from Meyers High School, and worked at the Scranton Tri- bune. He was a veteran of the US. Army, serving in World War II, where he received the European African Middle East- ern Service Medal with six Bronze Stars, and one Bronze Arrowhead. He was a member of the American Legion Post 350, Nanticoke; and served for many years as the Treasurer for the Sylvan Lake Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Joyce Widger. Surviving are son, Jay Kline Searfoss, Nanticoke; daughter, Jane Ellen Rogers, Texas; four and U.S. Army veteran Robert E. Evans, 73, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at Overlook Hospital in Sum- mit. Born in Shavertown, Pennsylvania, he lived in West- field for 41 years before mov- ing to Mountainside 5 years ago. Mr. Evans served in the US Army during Korea. He was the founder and former owner of the Bob Evans Agency in Cranford. Upon selling the agency in 1980, he went to work as a field underwriter for Peerless Insurance, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Westfield for over 40 years. He was a member of the Wheatsheaf Masonic Lodge in Roselle, which merged with the Loyalty Lodge #33 F. & A. M. in Union. He had a keen in- terest in young people and was very active in his children’s activities while they were growing up, having participat- ed in the Band Parent’s Associ- ation at Westfield High School, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Westfield and Rainbow Girls in: Westfield. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty J. Evans; his son, Robert E. Evans; Jr. and his wife, Barbara J. Evans; his daughter, Jane Evans ‘DelBian- co and her husband, David J. Delbianco; his brother-in-law, Carl E. Johnson; two grand- daughters, Abby and Megan DelBianco; his sister-in-law, Jean E.Evans; and several nieces and nephews. Dallas, PA 18612 Sisters of Mercy seek sponsors for tutorial program The Mercy Institute of Educational Development (MIED) is entering its 11th year of one-to-one instruction in remedia- tion/enrichment for Luzerne county students in grades kindergarten through high school in the areas of reading, math and English levels. Students attend MIED at Mercy Center on the campus of College Misericordia one to three times a week to work with a tutor on an individual basis. MIED works with a student’s school district to identify needs and plan a course of action. To date, approximately 1,000 students have participated in the MIED program. Current small grains policyholders also have until September 30 to make any changes to existing contracts. Price elections for the 2004 crop are $3.35 per bushel for wheat, $1.85 for barley, and $1.35 for oats. The Crop Revenue Coverage (CRC) plan of insurance is now available in Delaware, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Penn- sylvania, and Virginia. The CRC plan offers guarantees against a drop in the market price. Insurance premium subsidies have been significantly increased in recent years, particularly at the higher levels of coverage. Farmers are strongly urged to contact a local crop insurance agent as soon as possible for premium quotes and other details.
