Mounts must grow up fast By KEVIN KAZOKAS Post Correspondent My, how fast they've grown! Those are words Dallas head coach Ted Jackson probably hopes he could say about most of his football players by the end of the season. After losing a host of last year’s seniors to graduation, the Mountaineers must count on several young and somewhat in- experienced athletes to lead the way in 2003. “We need our young skill peo- ple to develop quickly,” Jackson said. “This is the smallest group of seniors we ever had. We only have eight seniors on the team. So we're going to be playing with a lot of guys that are un- derclassmen. We need them to grow up fast.” Jackson estimated the Moun- taineers lost about a dozen play- ers to graduation from last year’s club, a team that went 74 and fell to Selinsgrove, 28-14, in the Eastern Conference Divi- sion III semifinals. The list of those gone in- cludes key players quarterback Ryan Gryskevicz and defensive lineman Steve Salavantis. In total, Dallas returns only three starters apiece on offense and defense. But Jackson believes that if his young players can gain some maturity and limit mistakes, the Mountaineers could remain a force in the tough Wyoming Val- ley Conference. QUARTERBACK: Dallas will turn to junior Matt Kelly to Rm SE FOOTBALL guide the offense. Kelly has seen playing time in the past as a wide receiver and kick-return- er. He also served as backup quarterback the last two sea- sons. “We think Matt's a real good athlete, a real tough kid,” Jack- son said. “He’s worked real hard in the off-season to improve his strength.” : RUNNING BACKS: Junior Doug Harris will step in at tail- back along with senior Ryan Mark. Jackson said Harris did get some playing time last year. Meanwhile, junior = Buddy Kocher, a backup fullback last year, will take over the starting role at that position this season. WIDE RECEIVERS: Dallas: lost some size and experience in the passing game with the grad- uations of Jon Barbose (6-3) and Kevin Arnaud (6-0). Howev- er, Mike Race, a 6-1 sophomore, returns as a starter at split end. Seniors Adam Schoonover and Elijah Miller, both 6 feet, will play wingback. Jackson said juniors Jeff Bernosky and Kyle Zapoticky could battle it out for tight end. OFFENSIVE LINE: A veteran group of players will provide the protection up front. Three-year starter Doug Zaruta, a 215-b senior, returns to anchor the line at center. A pair of three- year starters comes back on the right side in guard Marty Mur- ray (265 lbs) and tackle John McGeehan (270). Both are sen- iors. Junior Matt Daube (295), a two-year starter, mans the left tackle position. Jackson also listed juniors John Yanik (215) and Steve Wengen (230) as see- ing time at guard. DEFENSIVE LINE: Dallas will count on returning starters McGeehan, Daube and Murray. Also look for Yanik, Wengen and Zapoticky to see action. “We have some nice size up front, but we're not going to be as quick as we have been,” Jack- son said. LINEBACKERS: Harris and Kocher will play the middle, while Ryan Mark and junior Matt Brokenshire patrol the out- side. All of them saw playing time last year, but not as starters. SECONDARY: Expect the skill players to serve as defen- sive backs, with Schoonover and Miller playing the corners, and Kelly at safety. All three en- ter their first season as starters in the secondary. : KICKING: Race will handle both the punting and placekick- ing duties. He played backup at both positions last season. OUTLOOK: Jackson said he has never suffered a losing sea- son during his previous 18 years as Dallas head coach. The Mountaineers will try to keep that streak alive for his 19th season in 2003. But with key games on the horizon against conference powers like Wyoming Area and Berwick, that will not be an easy task. = ° wi bi nr 2003 Dallas Mountaineers Name Rob Lenahan Jim Schwerdtman Matt Kelly Doug Harris Mike Race Rob Santillana Chris Parrish Nick Samanus Kyle Lewis Adam Schoonover Elijah Miller Tom Van Horn Buddy Kocher Alex Oko Ryan Mark Nick Major Matt Brokenshire Joe Lambert Josh Anderson Rob Tomko Nick Onzik Giryes Nijmeh D.J.
