10 The Dallas Post SPORTS Friday, September 5, 2003 Dallas (continued from page 9) Dallas went ahead to stay 29 seconds before halftime on a 5- yard run by Harris. Kelly, an elusive runner, rushed for 60 of the 76 yards in that drive. “He’s a little unorthodox at times,” Jackson said of Kelly, but he’s a player.” In the second half, the Moun- taineers held the Crusaders to just six offensive plays between the start of the third quarter and when Harris iced the game with a 3-yard run with 3:53 left. “He ran the ball well and he played inside linebacker as well,” Jackson said of Harris. “He wanted the end zone on that last score.” Coughlin drove to the Dallas 9, mostly on the scrambling of McCloskey, when the game was delayed because of lightning with 1:18 left. On the first play after the game resumed, Leo Ryan’s run pulled the Crusaders within 21-14. Coughlin then tried an onside kick in attempt to regain pos- session, but it was poorly exe- cuted and the ball went out of bounds. Dallas retained posses- sion and ran out the clock. Although Derhammer fumbled twice, he carried the ball 23 times for 122 yards. Nanticoke had plenty of op- portunities. It started from its own 40 yard line or closer on three of four second-half pos- sessions. The first two ended with a punt after just three plays. The third was Nanti- coke’s best chance of the game. On its first offensive play of the fourth quarter, quarterback Mike Sarnack connected with a wide open Chris Ushinski for a 29-yard gain, the biggest of the day for the Trojans. They were unable to get another first down, but set up to attempt a 37-yard go-ahead field goal. A delay-of-game penalty pushed Nanticoke back five yards, and Chris Dudeck’s 42- yard attempt fell short. The Trojans got the ball one more time, but again punted af- ter just three plays. Lehman then rushed the ball nine con- secutive times to run out the clock and sneak out of Nanti- coke with a 2-0 victory. Lehman junior Chrisse Kazmierski, a first-year starter at forward, broke a scoreless tie late in the first half. The Black Knights pulled away on second- half goals by junior midfielder Amanda Sagan and junior for- ward Allison Boris. The score could have been closer had it not been for some outstanding stops by Lehman junior goalie Shannon Prescott, who made seven saves. Last season, Prescott and Kazmierski were reserves to all- state players at Lehman who graduated. While players such as Prescott and Kazmierski did- n't start a year ago, they prac- ticed against the standouts of a team that won the PIAA Class 2A state title, and the workouts against the best then is now bringing out the best in them. “That helps your team come along so quickly because you've had such great role models,” Lehman coach Jean Lipski said. “It helps the kids step up when it is their turn.” The Black Knights weren’t as dominant as the final score might suggest, as the contest featured quality play on the part of both teams. “It was a great game all around,” Coughlin coach Colleen Wood said. “The final score doesn’t show that. “The chances we get, we have to make good on them.” Prescott, however, recorded seven saves to record her first varsity shutout. Her first start came Friday in an impressive 7- 2 victory at Delaware Valley. Last season, Prescott was the backup to Tracey Hudak, who is a freshman at Bloomsburg University and competing for the starting job there. “That’s the best preparation you can get,” Prescott said. Kazmierski was a reserve be- hind players such as Carla Chi- ampi, Megan DeCesaris, Meredith Edwards and Lisa Wasser, who are all playing Division I colleges this year. f “Practicing against our s ing lineup last year definitely helped,” Kazmierski said. “Play- ing against someone like Lisa Wasser — she was intimidating but she did motivate you to play better.” Sagan, one of the league’s top midfielders, made it 2-0 just un- der three minutes into the sec- ond half off an assist from Ryan Hoover, another first-year starter. Boris completed the scoring off a feed from Traci Ragukas with just over five minutes left. Both are returning starters. “We had so many athletes chomping at the bit waiting to get on the field,” Lipski said. “Now that they're getting the chance, they're happy to be out there and they are playing with a lot of heart.” Boys 3 on 3 Basketball League The Rock Recreation center will kick off its Fall Boys 3 on 3 Bas- ketball League for grades 7-8 Monday, September 8, at 5:30 p. 340 Carverton Road, Trucksville.
