Cancer Society needs volunteers The Wyoming Valley Unit of the American Cancer Society needs volunteer drivers for its Road to Recovery program. Road to Recovery is a program of volunteers who drive patients to treatment centers and home again. Your American Cancer Soci- ety needs more volunteers to unsure that all patients have trans- portation when they need it. Volunteers drive the American Can- cer Society van to transport patients in the Wyoming Valley. Road to Recovery volunteer can drive as little as once a month or as of- ten as a few times per week. Having reliable transportation and caring ACS volunteers to take them to their appointments is very comforting to them. For more information call Gina Severcool at 1-888-227-5445. Donations needed to keep Red Cross viable The American Red Cross is appealing to the public for monetary donations for its National Disaster Relief Fund. The fund has reached a dangerous 11-year low, putting it at one of its most criti- cal levels in the red Cross’ 122-year history. Local Wendy's and Burger King Restaurants around the Wyoming Valley have agreed to place Red Cross collection canis- ters near registers to remind customers to support the Disaster fund by donating their change. The American Red Cross is‘facing a financial crisis that could threaten its ability to offer critical lifesaving services to disaster victims throughout America. With a cash balance of only $1.5 mil- lion as of June 30, there is a call to action to help the organization replenish the Fund. Since July 2002, the Red Cross has spent more than $85 million responding to disasters, but has received only $26 million towards these efforts. Contributions can be made to the American Red Cross by call- ing 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Internet users can make a secure online credit card contribution by visiting www.redcross.org Contributions may also be sent to your local American Red cross chapter or to the American red cross, P.O.
