4 The Dallas Post SCHOOL Friday, August 1, 2003 Dallas School District to rededicate Middle School Messersmith graduate@®@ The Dallas School District will offi- cially rededicate the newly renovat- ed Dallas Middle School on Sun- day, August 10 at 3 p.m. Over the past 24 months extensive additions and repairs have been made to the building that was opened as a jun- ior high school in 1969. The com- prehensive project included com- plete updates to all classrooms, the gymnasium, library, kitchen and cafeteria. Renovations to the music wing integrate the expansion of the band and chorus rooms as well as the addition of a theory classroom and two student practice rooms. New construction incorporates the addition of a new administrative and guidance suite, two computer labs, a distance learning lab, a tele- vision studio, new art and wellness classrooms, several conference rooms, and a state-of-the-art nata- torium. The building will be open for tours immediately following the rededica- + tion. The public is invited to attend. from Duke University Michael F. Messersmith Jr. recently graduated from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He also received certification in Elementary Educa- tion at the May 11 commencement. ~ Messersmith matriculated to Duke on a U.S. Navy ROTC Scholarship and was commissioned as an active duty Ensign on May 9. At graduation, he was recognized with the USAA Scholarship Award. He is now stationed in San Diego, Califor- nia as a division officer for the Administrative Sec- tion on the USS Shiloh (CG-67), a cruiser within the Abraham Lincoln Battle Group. He has been selected to attend the Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion School in Charleston, S.C. after his 21 month tour aboard the USS Shiloh. \ Messersmith is a 1999 graduate of Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, where he received the Harry W. and Emma R. Ruggles Award for Outstanding Graduate. He is the son of Michael and lucy Messersmith, Dallas, and the grandson of Atty. and Mrs. Robert L. Fleming, also of Dallas. Piatt named to deans list Alyson Piatt was recently named to Grove City College’s Spring semester deans list. Piatt is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Piatt of Dallas. Faculty members monored by College Misericordia Three College Misericordia faculty members received awards for their outstanding service to College Misericordia during the annual commencement ceremony. Dr. James Calderone, Kingston, associate professor of so- cial work, was awarded the Pauly & Sidney Friedman Ex- cellence in Service Award. Dr. Brenda Pavill, Shavertown, associate professor of nursing, was awarded the Max & Tillie Rosenn Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Helen Speziale, Dallas, professor of nursing and director of the Service Learning Center, received the Barbara & Louis Ale- si Excellence in Scholarship Award. Brandt, a sixth grade student at Lehman-Jackson Ele- mentary School, Lehman, was presented with the Michael S. Gruen Citizenship Award at an Awards Program held re- cently at the school. This award is presented annually in memory of Michael College Misericordia inducts area four into honor society College Misericordia recently inducted new graduates into the Beta Chi chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor So- ciety. Alpha Sigma Lambda is the honor society for continuing ed- ucation students. The following local students were inducted: Carl Dymond, Jr., Dallas; Johnyne Hoyes, Shavertown; Sharon Kingsbury, Wyoming; Linda Salvo, Wyoming. Levinson named to Bates dean’s list Jeffrey B. Levinson of Dallas, was recently named to the spring semester dean’s list at Bates College in Lewiston Maine. Levinson, a junior physics major, was a member of the Repre- sentative Assembly, the student government at Bates. He is the son of Howard and Susan Levinson, 21 Windsor Drive and a 2000 graduate of Dallas High School. Janine M. Chalk, of Shavertown, has been named to the deans list at Boston University for the spring semester. Gruen, a sixth grade teacher at Lehman-Jackson who died in an automobile accident in October, 1976. McMahon named to dean’s list "Brian McMahon was recent- ly named to Northeastern University’s deans list for the spring quarter. McMahon, a resident of Dallas is majoring in engineer- ing.
