10 The Dallas Post SPORTS Friday, August 1, 2003 Gryskevicz (continued from page 9) However, Sunday’s festivi- ties represented a culmination to the Showcase series, which began in mid-June. This time, All-Stars from each side of the state got to compete against each other in a full-length nine-inning game. “It was definitely a higher intensity level at this one,” Gryskevicz said. “Even though we were just going out for fun, you get to play in front of pro scouts, so there was definitely a determination to win.” In addition, players in this round didn’t need to be con- cerned with advancing to fu- ture competitions. That allevi- ated the pressure somewhat, Gryskevicz said. “You just went out and played and had fun. You didn’t have to worry about making a cut or anything.” The event capped a summer of baseball success for the Bucknell-bound ballplayer. Be- sides reaching the East-West All-Star Game and delivering strong contributions to his Le- gion squad, Gryskevicz also made quite an impact at the Lackawanna Baseball Chal- lenge on June 29 at Lackawan- na County Stadium. He blasted a game-winning three-run home run for the Wyoming Valley Conference All-Star team, capping its 7-4 come-from-behind victory over the Mountain Valley Confer- ence All-Stars. “It was a good way to go out and finally wrap up my high school career,” said Gryske- vicz, who played for the Moun- taineers as both a pitcher and an outfielder. The right-hander said he now plans to shift his focus to- ward his upcoming college baseball career, where he hopes to see playing time both on the mound and in the out- field. Besides Gryskevicz, Tunkhannock’s Tim Schemel and Greater Pittston’s Brad Tucker and Matt Lopresto also played for the East in Sunday’s All-Star Game. Lopresto dou- bled and scored a run. Schemel also scored in a game where the East overcame 3-0 and 4-3 deficits. Sordoni (continued from page 9) have observers connecting stand- out play with the face and the name. “She is deceiving,” Pocono jun- ior coach Patsy Moratori said of Sordoni. “You don’t expect her to come up with the ball that she ends up getting. She anticipates and spring. Those sessions in- cluded U19 and Ul6 players along with Sordoni, who still qualified for the Ul4 division. While she didn’t stand out in that venue, the KSG tryouts were a different story. “When she got out there Poison and X-Plosion meet The Back Mountain X-Plo- sion defeated Abington demons 6 to 1 in the semi-fi- nals, which advanced X-Plo- sion to the finals, while Poi- son defeated Abington am- bush 4 to 3, which advanced them to the finals.
