Danielle Harding added a hit and an RBL Back Mountain 8, Hellertown 5 JULY 12 — Stephanie Ash- ley’s three-run homer snapped a 5-all tie, and Back Mountain went on to defeat Hellertown 8- 5 on Saturday in the opening game of the Section 4 Little League Softball Tournament. Ashley went 3-for-3 and also had a double. Her decisive homer cleared the fence at the Hellertown field, which is ap- proximately 185 feet from home plate, and scored Gaby Olshemski and Kylie Kustrin ahead of her. Katee Pelleschi was also 3- for-3 for Back Mountain, with a double and two RBI. Rachel Miller went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI, and was also the winning pitcher. Miller tossed all six innings, al- lowing just two hits. She struck out four and walked seven. Sarah Flannery went 1-for-3 with an RBI for Back Mountain. SENIOR SOFTBALL Northwest 10, Bob Horlacher 4 JULY 12 — Melissa Gibbons had eight strikeouts and no walks as Northwest defeated Bob Horlacher in the winners bracket on Friday. Jacky Hettes doubled in two runs for Horlacher. Sara Navin and Melissa Evans each added an RBI double. JUNIOR SOFTBALL Plains 7, Back Mountain 6 JULY 11 — Nicole Hoskins’ two-out gapper between right and center field in the bottom of eight inning scored Theresa Charnetski to give Plains a win in the winners bracket final. Down 6-3 going into the top of the seventh inning, Back Mountain was able to score three runs to tie the score. Back Mountain center fielder Megan McDonald kept her team alive with two great in the first inning in its 7-3 loss to National last Thursday. On Monday, it was a four-run third that proved costly. Judge and Hunter Englehart opened the third with singles, and each moved up a base on a passed ball. Judge scored on Peron’s ground out and Engle- hart scored on Cory Shaver’s sacrifice bunt. Mike Eckman continued the inning with a single and moved to third on Horn’s single. Horn then tried to steal second and when Forty Fort catcher Darren Dolan threw to the base, Eck- man broke for home. Forty Fort cut off Eckman, but during a chain of throws around the dia- mond one toss went awry. Eck- man crossed the plate with Na- tional’s fifth run, and Horn made the score 6-2 when Steve Olshemski singled him home. Besides his homer, Pugh also scored twice for Forty Fort. George Alles had the game's other extra-base hit, a double in the first. Lucas Harvey and Bil- ly McGuiness each had an RBI single in the fifth. The victory was National's sixth consecutive of the tourna- ment, but first at home since June 30. “They were so excited about catches in the sixth inning. Ally Evans led the hitting with a double and single. Juliann Pettit contributed two singles and an RBI. Harveys Lake 19, North- west 13 JULY 11 — Megan Devine led Harveys Lake in its losers bracket game, going went 4-for- 4 while striking seven on the mound. Other top hitters for Harveys Lake were Tina Watkins, who had two doubles and two sin- gles, and Victoria Lecek, who had a double and two singles. MINOR LEAGUE SOFTBALL Nanticoke 10, Back Mt 0 DORRANCE — Samantha Gow tossed a three-hitter and struck out five to earn the com- plete-game victory in four in- nings as Nanticoke defeated Back Mountain 10-0 Wednes- day to win the District 16 Mi- nor League Softball title. The victory was Nanticoke’s fourth without a loss and its second against Back Mountain. Nanticoke also beat Back Mountain 14-4 in the second round of the winners bracket. Back Mountain entered the game averaging 18.6 runs per game in the tournament. SENIOR BASEBALL Plains 11, Back Mountain 6 JULY 16. — Plains rallied for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Back Mountain 11-6 and capture the District 16 Senior League Base- ball championship Wednesday. Back Mountain trailed 5-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning, but scored six runs to take the lead. Matt Ka- pitula and Eric Samanas, who each went 3-for-4, had key hits during the rally. Plains answered with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead. Back Mountain 7, Avoca/Dupont 4 JULY 14 — Gragjan Kraszewski led the Back Moun- tain offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, sacrifice fly and three RBI in the District 16 losers bracket final. Matt Straub and Ryan Marascio added two hits each, with one of Straub’s a double. Matt Shiskowski got the win, striking out five. Legion Baseball Plymouth 15, Back Mountain 11 JULY 16 — The Post 672 American Legion baseball team got out-slugged by Plymouth in the final game of the season, 15-11. It wasn’t a good day for pitchers, as the two teams combined for 30 hits in seven innings. Adam Tkaczyk drove in four runs for the Hawks with two triples and a double. Pat McHugh plated a pair with three hits, Ryan Harvey and Matt Ide had two hits each. Back Mountain finishes the 2003 season with a 9-15 league record, 10- 16 overall. Back Mountain 6, Greater Pittston 4 JULY 15 — Back Mountain could only muster three hitsat West Pittston, but two were home runs and the Hawks came away with the win against league-leading Greater Pittston. Pitcher Ryan Gryskevicz surrendered three runs on four hits in the first inning. one of them a two-run homer. Gryskevicz settled down and limit- ed Pittston to only one hit over the last six innings. With the Hawks trailing 4-2 in the fifth, Brian Cornia followed a Gryskevicz walk with a two-run homer to tie the score. Dusty Kapson then connected on the game-winner in the top of the seventh, a two-run blast over the left field fence. Gryskevicz fanned nine in the complete-game victory. B.J.
