Between 700 and 800 per- sons living northeast of Route 309 in Kingston and Dallas Township have petitioned C.L. Myers to operate a bus line in that area. After a debate, which at times became heated, Dallas Borough Council at a recent meeting decided to hire a fourth police officer, Bob Kel- ley. The three-day, 29th annual Lehman Horse Show began with the Lehman Horse Show Parade. The big event of open- ing night at the showgrounds is the crowning of the Snow Queen. 20 Years Ago - May 25, 1983 CLINIC PLANNED NEAR MEADOWS APARTMENTS Plans are underway to build a new medical clinic housing three doctors on Old Lake Road in Dallas in the vicinity of the Meadows senior citizen apart- ment development. A reapplication to build town houses in Dallas Township in the triangular area bounded by Church Street, center Hill Road and Claude Street has been made by developers Sobeck and Lindquist. In Kingston Township, police reported a rash of Halloween type incidents, the first was that the side door of the Trucksville Elementary School on Oak Street was painted with obscenities and then a 1975 Ford Grenada was soaped with graffiti passages. Austin, 56, of Mooretown Road, Sweet Valley, died Saturday June 21, 2003 Born April 18, 1947, in Kingston, he was a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Legas) Austin. He graduated from Kingston High School and was a member of the 1963 Kingston Huskies championship football team. He also graduated from Penn State University. He was in business with his father and brothers at Austin’s Exxon Ser- vice Center, Kingston. He also worked for the Pennsylvania Game Commission as a Farm Game Manager in Wyoming and Luzerne counties. He was owner of the Stronghold Tree Farm and president of the Stronghold Gun Club. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Lake Silkworth and its Holy Name Society. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene. Surviving are his sister, Dorothy Melovitz, Stockton, N.J.; brothers, Anthony, Robert and Rick, all of Mooretown; and nieces and nephews. EDITH WARD Member of Maple Grove U.M. Church Edith Pearl Ward, 93, of Pikes Creek, died Monday June 23, 2003 at Summit Health Care Center, Wilkes-Barre. Born in Pikes Creek, she was the daughter of the late Sime- on and Stella (Woods) Ward. She was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church, where she was a Sun- day School teacher for many years. She was preceded in death by brothers, Earl, Steve and Arthur. Surviving are nieces and nephews. JAMES OPLINGER U.S. Army veteran of World War II James W. Oplinger, 84, of Kingston, died Monday June 23, 2003 at home. Born March 17, 1919, in Luzerne, he was a son of the late Walter C. and Daisy Mae (Cease) Oplinger. He was a US. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was employed as a foreman by the Tobyhanna Army Depot. He was a mem- ber of the Shavertown United Methodist Church, Anthracite Post 283 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kingston, and the Dis- abled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Betty An- thony. Surviving are daughters, Bonnie Matello, Forty Fort; Karen Adams, Trucksville; Lin- da Burns, Forty Fort; Margy Sromovski, Larksville; six grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; sisters, Viola Oplinger, Kingston; and Betty Lou Oplinger, Ancram, N.Y.
