8 Dallas Post Dallas, PA Friday, May 30, 2003 Budget (continued from page 1) anced, which was a great con- cern for him. Chamberlain asked about a possible millage in- crease. “If need be, but I'm not sure that we actually need one right now,” DeCesaris replied. Kathleen Williams, business manager, said the budget is cur- rently based on continuing the current millage rate of 221 mills in Luzerne Country and 42 mills for Noxen in Wyoming County. Earned income tax will be down by $30,000 according to a pro- jection by Berkheimer. Interest earnings are also down consider- ably, and the state “didn’t give us anything to write home about” said Williams. However Williams did say that she had already gone over the budget with Superintendent Robert O. Roberts, but only the “truly frivolous things that we cut out each year” are already cut. The proposed budget was to be adopted Thursday night. It must be available for public review for one month before the board can approve a final budget. The board again discussed building a maintenance storage building. Williams asked the board to consider constructing a large building, because the school lacks storage space. How- ever, director Moderno Rossi felt that there was no reason to rush into this building, and suggested that the board table this until a more economical option is found. Charles Balavage said that while searching the internet he Vote found more economical buildings that would serve the same pur- pose. At that point the board agreed to table this motion until other options are presented. Also discussed was the possi- ble addition of a swim team to Lake-Lehman’s winter sports. Mahon brought up his concerns, saying that he was apprehensive about the budget being bal- anced, and so he could not, “in good conscience spend this mon- ey.” Board President Michelle Coombs said that she also could not see approving a swim team at this point, when the board has been given no costs. For example there was no projected salary for a coach presented. The board agreed to table the topic, until further research is done. The board recognized May's students of the month. Elizabeth Sullivan, 9th grade, Patrick McMahon, 10th grade, Nicole Walsh, 11th grade, and Kimberly Jones, 12th grade were each pre- sent at the meeting to receive their certificates and congratula- tions. High School Guidance Coun- selor Diane Sherman said these students are recognized for their attendance, grades, positive atti- tude, helpfulness to other stu- dents, and effort. “These are stu- dents that try very hard to be the best that they can be”, she said. Lake Lehman's next school board meeting for general pur- poses will be held June 17, at 7 p.m. in the music room of the Lehman-Jackson Elementary School. Mrs. Race, Music teacher, posed with a poster representing the tropical theme. Lehman-Jackson becomes tropical paradise for a night From the art work to the music, the theme this year was vibrant- ly tropical at the Lehman-Jackson Elementary School Science and Art Fair, held May 22. Mrs. Roese, the Lehman-Jackson elementary school art teacher, said the school has “wonderful parent's that are very supportive of students” and the turnout was tremendous. It wasn’t all home free in paradise, the students studied art from the South Pacific, Pacific and the West Indies. Their hard work paid off, as the halls were decorated with trees, flamingos, and beautiful drawing and paint- ings. Mrs. Irene Race, the Lehman-Jackson elementary music teacher, said her students “had a wonderful time with this theme.” The fourth grade students sang and played instruments that tied the theme together. Students from third through sixth grade created original science fair projects. “Third and fourth graders received extra credit, and fifth and sixth graders were graded” said student Winter Wenner. While it was a lot of work for the students and teachers alike, it all paid off as students, teachers and parents wandered through (continued from page 1) with Gochoel in the lead. Piazza said recounts are not automatic in cases where totals are within a handful of votes. In- stead, a recount has to be peti- tioned by the candidate within five days of of the official count. Because of this primary’s unusu- ally long counting process, peti- tions need to be requested within five days from the end of the count. He anticipates the count to conclude Friday, May 30. Piazza said there have been a number of recount requests, but "none from the Back Mountain have come in. In the Lake-Lehman School District Region 1 election, where two seats are open, previously forecast results could change. Part of Region 1, Noxen, is in Wyoming County. At this point, those numbers are not official yet either. Previous unofficial to- tals have Michelle Maher- Coombs and Lois Kopcha on the Republican ballot and Mark Ko- rnoski and Lois Kopcha winning the Democrat ticket. the tropics, right in Lehman Township.
