; @>cvers - The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Friday, May 23, 2003 9 (continued from page 1) The studies would help deter- mine the cause of the overflows that occur during heavy rain. Richard Boice, Manager of the Harveys Lake Municipal Author- ity, said there has been suffi- cient concern about whether the sewers could handle the flow to warrant council to require Ken Williams, the developer of the Hanson's property, to conduct a sewer study. Because of the size of the development, the study is just one of a variety of surveys the developer will have to con- duct, including one pertaining to traffic. According to Boice, the “prob- lem” with what he called rare overflows is predominantly on the same side of the lake the de- velopment would be built on, the north side. He said because of the way the sewer lines run around the avels toward Hanson's and then continues to the authority. Boice said the majority of the homes at the lake are on that side. “That's why you have a prob- lem there, you have 80 percent of your homes going that way.” He said to compensate, when the system was built in 1977, the pumps on that side were made larger to reflect the larger volume flowing from the area. No major developments have been built there since, said Boice. @® the largest volume of flow POST PHOTO/ERIN YOUNGMAN A developer wants to build more than 100 townhomes on the former Hanson's Amusement Park, along the north side of Harveys Lake. There are concerns the sewer system could be overloaded. Asked whether he thought the current system could accommo- date the additional 35,000 gal- lons of waste water daily, Boice responded: “What's the flow right now? It's nowhere near be- ing full.” But, he said, the final word will come from engineers hired to examine the situation. He felt Marina Commons did- n't pose any concern, because unlike the Hanson's develop- ment, its waste water will go di- rectly to the main pumping sta- tion. Carmon said any time a ma- jor change is proposed within its boundaries, the borough is re- quired to submit revisions to its sewage facilities plan to DEP for approval. Asked whether the develop- ment could be approved given the current overflow conditions Carmon said: “It will be an issue as far as any kind of approvals go from us.” Relay (continued from page 1) member is asked to try to raise a minimum of $100 each. Ideas for fundraising are: theme parties, bake sales, car washes, pizza parties, dress down day at the office, raffles, bowling tour- naments and more. “Twenty-four hours is not uch time to spend for such a great cause,” said Michelle Cas- setori, luminaria chairperson. “It's a wonderful experience,” said Mary Fran Thomas, chair- person of the Back Mountain Relay. “It's heartwarming to share these moments to honor those who have fought the fight and won, and to remember fondly those who were less for- tunate. If someone wants to be a part of the event, but can’t walk or run, they can still feel like they are a part of things by pur- chasing a candle or luminaria or by donating something that we can use or give away at the event.” The relay is the largest special event in the country. It is held: in more than 3,300 communi- ties nationwide, and 132 events are held in Pennsylvania alone. If you would like more infor- mation on forming a team or participating in any way, please call Sarah Wick at the American Cancer Society at 1-888-227- 5445 or Chairperson Mary Fran Thomas at 650-6364. Commit- tee members Kelly Borthwick at 239-0191 or Michelle Cassetori at 388-2930 are also available to answer questions or distribute information and registration forms.
