Dallas Post Dallas, PA Friday, May 9, 2003 Youthful artists, Old Master styles Wyoming Seminary Lower School held its 13th annual Salon of Children’s Impres- sions April 30. The exhibition featured artwork by 27 second- grade students who had spent the school year studying art history and art appreciation. The paintings and drawings they produced were influenced by their study of the acknowl- edged masters of the art, such as van Gogh, Monet, Matisse and others. Parents and visi- tors viewed the work that was displayed in the school's Sor- doni Library. In photos, clockwise from top right: Doreen Dickinson stood proudly with her son, Conor, and his painting, which resembled a Monet; lan Richardson's parents, Lynne and Michael, with one of lan’s two paintings, influenced by Vincent van Gogh; Frank Henry III's work, inspired by Henri Matisse, was held by his father, Frank Henry Jr.; One of Tyler Harvey's paintings used the theme of a van Gogh, piece, “Chair for Gauguin.” Mailman (continued from page 1) “I've seen people have babies, the kids grow up, go on to college POST PHOTOS/CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK and move away. I consider them more like friends than I do cus- tomers,” he said. A walk with him to deliver mail will take one’s mind back to a time when communities were strengthened by the familiarity of conspicuous routine, as people on the street — customers, even the chief of police — greet him by name as he passes by. “We love our mailman,” said Christy Straitiff of orthodontists Nahas and Donahue on Main Street. “He's pretty much here at the same time every day. He's al- ways very pleasant.” There may be a popular image of the friendly, neighborhood mail carrier, but Jones said so- cial skills are not part of the training program. “I've met some mean ones (carriers),” he said. Years ago he said he had the opportunity to leave the Dallas office, but it was the “nice” peo- ple that kept him from going. He said he did leave at one point when he was drafted to help implement the “zip plus four” zip code system in metro- politan areas across the state. “He (a manager) wanted me to implement it in Dallas. I did such a good job, he asked me to go away for a week.” Jones said the vi wR “I don’t mind the snow; I hate the rain - only because I likce to deliver the mail dry.” Dan Jones 30-year mail carrier week turned into a year and a half. By the time he was done he had helped start the system in areas including Williamsport, Harrisburg, Mansfield and Allen- town. The largely physical work has come at a price, although Jones wouldn't look at it that way. He said he has never been bitten by a dog, but a nasty fall on the job did cause him to break his neck. “I popped a disc right into the spinal chord. I didn’t think “® retiring the operation we great. Let's face, it old age doesn’t come alone,” he said. In fact Jones's only complaint about the job is the rain. “I don’t mind the snow; I hate the rain — only because I like to deliver the mail dry.” Jones said he isn’t ready to re- tire. Instead, he said, he has an- other 30 years to go. LADY'S RUNNING STITH 54TO 10 19!
