It's great,” says captain Joe Biredny. “Before this year we e importance of the squad hav- g its own practice and workout ace that allows them to im- ove faster and farther. ~ Seeded second in the butterfly vent for upcoming district meet, the senior says he couldn't even swim before freshman year and now he looks forward to compet- ing in college. If Stredny wins at districts, he will qualify for ‘states. “In ninth grade I didn’t even think about making states,” he said. This year, Joe reached a major goal when he broke the ool record in the butterfly nt. Bob Murphy, who is also a team captain, says he believes that “if the team goes out and re- ally swims their best” at districts they could do very well and pos- sibly reach the state champi- -onships in several events. | “I really hope to get to states in my senior year,” says Murphy. “It would be the culmination of four years hard work.” | Captain Lacey Cooper has also Been with the team since fresh-. an year and holds her own in veral events. Cooper is now nsidering two of three college oices that would see her swim- gning after high school. # Another team captain, senior Jen Arthur, consistently wins #Wo or more events at each meet d is one of the top swimmers the league. “I've been getting better and tter at every meet,” says “Before this year we were always on someone else’s - schedule.” Joe Stredny Dallas swimmer Arthur. “As a sophomore I was a finalist in state competition and I hope to equal that this year.” Jen says that throughout her four years on the squad, her teammates and the coaches are really what made the sport worth coming back to each sea- son. Stretanski attributes much of the team’s success to he influ- ence of the swimmers who stuck it out and were patient while waiting for the pool to be ready. Dallas also has a top per- former in diving, freshman Alar- ic Eby. He won the district meet last week, while teammate Alex Tasco finished third. In diving, schools must be concerned with safety and be- cause of strict rules it is ex- tremely difficult to qualify for districts. Divers must be able to do all 11 dives extremely well in order to make it. “There are only three boys divers league-wide who qualified for districts,” says Stretanski. “And we have two of them.” Whitney Bolton was fifth at the district girls diving meet. Other seniors who, in the words of Stretanski, have all had “great seasons” and are “great kids,” are Mark O’Brien, John Gilligan, Steve Losh, Annie Savage, Lynn Kirkwood, Dan Piccillo, Meg Riley, Rob Guard and Pete VanLoon. / FOR THE DALLAS POST/NIKO J KALLIANIOTIS Bishop O’ Reilly players David Lohin, left and Matt Flanagan try to steal the ball as Seton Catholic players scramble for control. . Crossin leads O’Reilly to win - Staff report YATESVILLE — Bishop O'Reilly sophomore guard Tim Crossin scored a game-high 18 points in leading the Queensmen to a 63-47 victory over Seton Catholic Saturday in a District 2 Class A boys quarterfinal at Pittston Area High School. O'Reilly will meet the winner of the Bishop O’Hara-Forest City quarterfinal game in the semifinals at a site to be determined. The Queensmen (17-8) controlled the game with a strong defense that at one point held seventh-seeded Seton (7-18) without a field goal for more than 10 minutes during the first and second quarters. With the Queensmen holding an 11-6 edge at the start of the sec- ond quarter, Crossin made the first of his two three-pointers, mak- ing the score 14-6. The basket launched Bishop O'Reilly on a 7-1 run. Queensmen senior center David Lohin scored 15 points and ju- nior forward Matt Flanagan added 10. Crossin’s efforts played a critical role in helping O'Reilly establish a lead it would not relinquish. The Queensmen, who led 23-17 at the half, relied on their tri-captain for 10 first-half points.
