Winkler works for the Depart- ment of Environmental Protec- tion and has run blood collec- tions there for the last dozen or so. “It is a small gesture of com- munity service for me in re- sponse to my many blessings,” said the dedicated volunteer. Last week, in an unusual joint appeal, the nation’s two main blood suppliers, the American Red Cross and America’s Blood Centers, urged prompt dona- tions due to the critical blood shortage around the country. All blood types are needed. The Regional Blood Center in Hanover Township usually maintains at least a three-day supply. “We are generally an ex- porter to help out larger areas like Philadelphia, but we've been importing blood for the last few months,” said Regina Allen, “It’s really a very small gesture but it has great rewards.” Anna Winkler Dallas American Red Cross Field Rep- resentative for the Wyoming Val- ley. : “It is a very dangerous situa- tion to be in,” Allen said. “We re- ally need people to come out and donate now. We can use all the help we can get.” The American Red Cross has a full schedule of blood collections set up for the near future. A col- lection will be held Friday, Jan- uary 24 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Route 118, Dallas, from 1-6 p.m. As with all community collections, no appointment is needed. Blood donors need to be 17 years of age, weigh at least 105 . pounds, and be healthy. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to complete the donation. “We hope to get 40 to 45 donors at St. Paul's and are tar- geting A-negative, B-negative and O-negative, but we need all types,” said Allen. “The current blood supplies are being sent out to hospitals as soon as they become available.” If you have any questions or want information about other area blood collections, you can call 1-800-GIVE LIFE to be con- nected to the American Red Cross’s Regional Blood Center.
