Agriculture nearby can also send pollutants to the lake vell as any wastewater enter- the lake — through septic systems working improperly, or illegal dumping of sewage. ‘According to Carmon, about 10 years ago the borough had to close the lake over Labor Day weekend because of a severe al- gae bloom. “It was the same ba- sic problem, warmed up water and the nutrient amounts in the lake all combined to form a par- ticularly nasty algae that is a skin irritant.” Carmon said the borough hired a water pollution company that used copper sulfate to de- stroy the algae. ENCON (continued from page 1) struggling for the past couple years. “The final decision was made in the second week of December, but we've been undergoing cul- tural and operational transfor- mations for over two years,” said Ray. Ray said for over two years the company has fought to improve its competitive position in the global market. “We just reached a point where it's (the company) not a viable stand alone busi- ness,” said Ray. Ray said employees were noti- fied December 16. Layoffs are anticipated to begin on or around February 15 of this year. “We are targeted to have the op- eration closed by March,” he said. According to Ray, ENCON has been in the Back Mountain for 30 years. Watlow purchased the business in 1997. Ray said the majority of the employees to be laid off have been with the com- pany for a many years. Ray said that while some of “the product” will be transferred to the parent company in Missouri, there are no plans to transfer any employ- ees. Ray said Watlow has put to- gether a task force to help relo- cate employees to other compa- nies. “The people here have been tremendous in participating and contributing to bring about a different end, but you reach a point where you have to make those difficult decisions,” said Ray. In addition to displacing 97 employees, according to Len Kozick, tax collector for Dallas Township, the closing will cost the school district a substantial tax revenue loss of $32,567 a year. The township will lose nearly $1,500 a year in real es- tate tax revenue. ENCON went from boom to bust since 1998 sale The recent History of Energy Converters reads like a road map of the modern economy. The company was founded in 1973 by Hanford Eckman, who had been general manager of a Singer plant in Trucksville. That plant moved in 1972 to New Jersey, but Eckman wanted to return to the Back Mountain and did so the following year. ENCON completed a 20,000 square foot expansion in the spring of 1997, barely a year be- fore it was sold to Watlow Elec- tric Manufacturing Company of St. Louis. At that point, ENCON employed 230 people. Watlow was at the time the world’s largest manufacturer of industrial heaters, sensors and controls. ENCON was an attrac- tive acquisition because it pro- duced heating elements for the consumer market, where Wat- low was weak, and held patents on key components and processes. When the purchase of ENCON was announced, in February 1998, Watlow officials offered assurances of a commitment to the Dallas plant, and even spoke of possible expansion. “Watlow is more than willing to invest money into the opera- tion,” said Judy Simms-Brown, manager of marketing commu- nications for the company. Now, ENCON is being shut- tered and what few jobs were left are being absorbed into Watlow’s Missouri operations. Christmas tree pickup in Kingston Twp.
