Born March 26, 1922, in Scranton, she was a daughter of the late Dean and Blanche (Hutchings) Piper. She belonged to Sweet Valley Church of Christ and its Lydia Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R.; and brother, Edmund Piper. BASIL SMITH, RSM Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Sister M. Basil Smith, RSM, a member of the Dallas Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, died Fri- day December 27, 2002 at Mer- cy Center, Dallas. The former Zita Marie Smith was born Oct. 10, 1904 in New Germany, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Long) Smith. She was a 1922 graduate of Mount Aloysius Academy, Cresson, and received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Col- lege Misericordia. She entered the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate in Cresson on Sept. 8, 1929 and pronounces her vows as a Sister of Mercy on March 12, 1932. She ministered as an elemen- tary school teacher in the dioce- ses of Altonna/Johnstown and Pittsburgh for many years. From 1969 to 1991, she was at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Al- toona as a teacher in pastoral ministry. In 1991, she retired to the prayer ministry at McAuley Hall, Cresson, and in 1995 con- tinued this ministry at Mercy Center. She was preceded in death by brothers, Vincent, Benno, Thomas, Clement, and Fr. Ju- lian Smith, OSB; sisters, Mary Chirdon and Sister M. Matthew Smith, RSM. Surviving are brother, Fr. Merithew Sr., 97, of Campground Road, Dallas, died Monday December 30, 2002 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospi- tal. Born in Exeter, he was the son of the late Henry and Myrtle (Sickler) Merithew. He attended West Wyoming schools and the Huntington Mills Academy. He was employed as a carpenter by the government at the Carlisle Barracks during World War II, the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland and other army camps. He was later employed for the Sordoni and Masteranni Construction Companies. He re- tired as general field superin- tendent for the Murphy and Murphy Corp., New York. He was a member of the Carpenters Local 514 for many years. He was preceded in death by hid'sister, Ethel Knorr. Arthritis self-help course The Arthritis Foundation will conduct an Arthritis Foundation Self-Help Course (ASHC) beginning Thursday, January 9 at the Kir- by Health Center Building located at 71 North Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre. The course will run through mid February, and con- sists of a two-hour class each week, from 2-4 p.m. The ASHC course that was designed by the Stanford Arthritis Center and funded by the National Institutes of Health, will address all the necessary components needed to have a better quality of life while dealing with a chronic illness. Topics to be covered in the course will be diet, exercise, medications, alternative therapies, physiological aspects of living with a chronic illness, preventative measures to take for joint preservation, etc. A $25 donation is requested to help defray the cost of course ma- terials.
