The 135 pounder had 78 wrestlers in his Greco-Roman bracket and 88 in his Our Lady of Victory golf tournament Sept. 20 Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake, will be holding their ninth annual “George Appel Memorial Golf Tourna- ment” on Friday, September 20 at Mill Race Golf Course, Benton. The $60 fee includes green fees, cart, lunch, social hour, buffet dinner and beverages. The format of play will be “Captain & Crew”. Lunch and registration will be held at noon with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. First hole-in-one on #8 wins a trip for two to the Bahamas. Hole sponsorships are available. Tournament supports American Cancer Society The Newberry Country Club Ladies Golf League dedicated its annual Pink Ball Tournament on August 5 to the American Cancer Society. The team of Mimi Koch, Sheila Mc- Fadden and Peg Thomas were the tour- nament winners after a match of cards. Ruth Blackburn and Diana Dreher tied for the longest drive on hole 7. Lois Hartman was closest to the pin on hole 2 and Dolores Leehan hit closest to the balloons on hale 6. Bernice Brandwene recorded the lowest number of putts. Luncheon followed play at the Apple- tree Terrace. : Door prize winners were: Flo DePolo, Edna Lichtig, Cassie Munsing, and Peg Thomas. Ruth Blackburn, Graceann Colarus- so and Jane Jones co-chaired the event. Freestyle bracket. Matt wrestled his way to fifth place in both divisions to become an All-American in both freestyle and Greco. The 2002 Cadet and Junior Nation- als set a record as the largest wrestling tournament in the world. The Irem Women’s Golf Championships at Irem Temple Country Club were held during the first week of August. Open house at Penn State Wilkes-Barre gym Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Athletic and Recreation Building (ARB) will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 25. The open house will give the community an opportunity to see approximately $70,000 worth of new Cybex weight room equipment that was recently donated to the campus. ARB Memberships start at $90. BMT American 8 and 9 s end winning season The Back Mountain American League 8 and 9-year-old All-Stars recently complet- ed their season. During July and early August, the team defeated Mountaintop, Kingston, Forty Fort, Swoyersville, Ed-Lark, Mayflower and Plymouth.
