The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Thursday, July 11, 2002 9 THE DALLAS POST Section 2 From the bullpen Timothy J. Raub How about some play places for grown-ups’? Sunday has become one of the best days of the week for me this summer. I look forward to getting up in the morning, putting on a uni- form, which I swear someone shrunk in the dryer and has nothing to do with the 75 pounds I've added on since high school, getting out to the field and playing some softball with my teammates on our Kingston Rec team — and so do a lot of other men and women in the area. We take the field or step up to . the plate, and for an hour or so, forget about the stresses of life, hoping not to pull any muscles or break any bones in the process. I'm a little out of shape, not ready to admit it just yet, and neither are most of the guys in our league, but at this point in our lives, who cares? We're hav- ing a lot of fun. Back Mountain municipal gov- ernment officials have been call- ing for the re-evaluation of zon- ing ordinances for recreational greenspace, and the addition of some adult recreational leagues and fields would be a great addi- tion. News of a future Back Moun- tain recreational facility in Lehman Township is a plus for families with children who par- ticipate in youth leagues throughout the area, but there are still no plans for adult in- volvement. Noxen hosts a quality adult flag football league, and teams from throughout the Wyoming Valley, Back Mountain and Tunkhannock areas annually bring teams in, have a great time and find a way to get out of the Lazy Boy recliners and away from the TV set for a while. But that is the extent of recre- ation league involvement adults have out here. Kirby Park, the Kingston Rec and Forty-Fort airport have great recreational facilities, and the same can be said for Kingston Township and Dallas Borough. But an initiative needs to be taken to get some leagues off the ground. This is the perfect time for municipal governments to look into forming some adult recre- ational leagues. Adult recre- ation would not only bring peo- ple out to play, but make more adults with and without children aware of what local municipali- ties have to offer to the resi- dents. Kingston Township has a great recreational facility, which could easily be adapted for adult leagues, both Back Mountain school districts have quality ath- letic fields and Dallas Borough's basketball courts could easily handle an adult basketball league. For years I've had to trek into the Valley for softball and flag football games, and one in our own back yard would be an as- set. It would not only bring in teams from the Back Mountain, but with the drop of teams in Wilkes-Barre’s adult softball leagues due to Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom McGroarty's czar- like attitude towards recreation- al athletes, and the termination of the North American Sports See BULLPEN, pg 10 Teaching future Black Knights By TIMOTHY J.
