Born Sept. 5, 1911, in Hazle- ton, he was a son of the late Frank and Carmella (Mercolino) Sacco. He was a 1929 graduate of Hazleton High School. From 1957 to 1989, he worked for Valley Country Club, Butler Township, and was the club's manager for more than 30 years. He was associated with Villa Roma, Harveys Lake. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Stella Kowalski; brothers, Frank, An- thony and Dr. Ralph; and sis- ter, Annella Fortunata. Surviving are his wife of 26 years, the former Lillian Kasacavage; son, John, Conyn- gham; sister, Mary Ferdinand, Hazleton; and nieces and nephews. Born March 27, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Margaret (Reese) Johns. She belonged to Puri- tan Congregational Church, Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of East- ern Star 345 and Shawnee Se- nior Citizens, both in Ply- mouth, and Firwood Senior Citizens and St. Therese’s Citi- zens, both in Wilkes-Barre. She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Surviving are her son, William J., Peoria, Ariz.; a grandson; a great-grand- daughter; sisters, Elsie Miller, Wilkes-Barre, and Audrey Mc- Gaugh, Dallas; and several nieces and nephews. CLAYTON TAYLOR World War II veteran who received the Bronze Star Clayton Taylor, 78, of Beau- mont, died Friday, May 31, 2002 at home. Born Nov. 12, 1923 in Wilkes- Barre, he was the son of the late Alva and Dora Kirkham Taylor. He graduated from the Beau- mont School system and attend- ed the Beaumont Union Gospel Church. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Infantry in the European Theatre of Op- erations for nearly two years, so meritoriously that he received the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star Medal for heroism. He worked on his fa- ther's farm in Beaumont and as a salesman for Klein Aufo Parts in Tunkhannock. He coached Little League teams in Noxen and Beaumont and was an avid baseball fan, leaning towards the Chicago Cubs team. He was an outdoorsman and loved all types of hunting. Blessed with a good singing voice, he enjoyed singing solos at church services. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion; grandson, Jay Evans; brothers, Alva, Ralph, Frank, Robert, George, and Her- bert; and sisters, Mae Binker, Cecelia McGlynn, Esther Newhart, and Evelyn Smith. Surviving are daughters, Shawn Jerauld, La Plume and Tona Evans, Montana; son, Bri- an Evans, Centermoreland; grandsons Jess Evans, Wyoming, Jarred Evans, Mon- tana, and Bly and Joseph Jer- auld, La Plume; sister, Ida Ioan- na, Plains, and many nieces and nephews. CHARLES MCCOY Former officer for the PA Department of Corrections Charles R. McCoy, 83, of Dal- las, died Monday May 27, 2002 at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas. Born August 15, 1918 in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Charles A. and Mazie J. (Stine) McCoy. He was a. U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Before retiring, he was an officer for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections for 29 years. He belonged to Shavertown United Methodist Church, Shavertown section of Kingston Township. He was a member of Irem Temple, Shrine Club of Wilkes-Barre, Caldwell Conservatory, Blooms- burg, and the Masonic Lodge. He was president of the Shrine Brass Band. Demetria Cherve- nak, of the Dallas Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, died Fri- day May 31, 2002 at Mercy Center. The former Agnes Mary Cher- venak was born May 5, 1908, in Carrolltown. She was a dgugh- ter of the late Michael and Eliza- beth (Mandula) Chervenak. She was a 1926 graduate of Mount Aloysius Academy and held a bachelor of science degree from St. Francis College, Loretto. She entered the Sisters of Mercy at Cresson on Aug. 15, 1927, and pronounced her vows on Jan. 3, 1929. For almost 50 years, she taught elementary school in the Altoona-Johnstown and Pitts- burgh dioceses. She was princi- pal at Holy Cross School, Span- gler; St. Mary Catechetical School, Windber; and St. Matthew School, Tyrone. After retiring from teaching, she w: on the staff of the bookstore ‘at Mount Aloysius College, Cres- son. She participated in the Prayer Ministry at McAuley Hall, Cresson. She moved to Mercy Center in 1994.
