10 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Dallas, PA Thursday, May 16, 2002 Salavantis (continued from page 9) sons for Salavantis, though. An early season injury kept him from throwing in a number of meets, but since recovering Salavantis said he is ready for the district meet “My elbow was causing me problems earlier in the year, but I went to my chiropractor and it feels better now, so I want to hit the state qualifying distance,” ~ Salavantis said. Javelin is not the only event Salavantis has been successful in for Dallas this season. He is also one of the better throwers in the discus, and defeated re- turning District 2 Class 3A champion Mike Piekanski from Wyoming Valley West in the two team’s dual meet earlier in the season. “I was throwing good (in the discus) in the beginning of the year, but I had to work out some kinks,” said Salavantis. “(Defeat- ing Piekansky) was the turning point because 1 started getting my throws out further and feel- ing comfortable about it. I put one out there on my first throw and that took all the pressure off, and then on the next throw I got it out there far. ‘I'm hoping to get up around the same area at Districts too.” First-year head coach Matt Samuel credits his team’s turn- around from 0-14 over the past two seasons to a winning record this year to athletes like Sala- vantis. “Steve is definitely one of the most diligent athletes I've ever been around,” said Samuel. “He has a heart and an effort that I haven't seen in a long time. He is very respectful and is still learning. He is not done better- ing himself as an athlete.” One way Salavantis hopes to better himself before his time at Dallas is through is to break the school record in the javelin — the oldest standing record at the school. “I'm six feet away from break- ing the record in the javelin and four feet away in the discus,” said Salavantis. “I'm pretty con- fident that if I don’t get the record in the javelin this year that I will next year.” The current school record in the javelin 190-2 set by Mike Wilkes in 1966. Dave Townsend set the discus record in 1995 with a throw of 150-10. “I would like to get the school record, district title and qualify for states all in one package, but I think next year is my best chance to get the district title,” said Salavantis. “By next year, my goal is to be over (200 feet in the javelin).
