Lawlor, Ph.D., assistant profes- sor of physics and astronomy, and Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s department of Continu- ing Education recently announced plans for an Astronomy Workshop beginning in April. This eight-hour, non-credit workshop is di- rected at amateurs, or anyone interested in learning about astronomy. It will focus on general astronomical phenomena including why we have seasons and the phases of the moon. Topics will be explored mostly though “hands-on” activities. General facts about the planets, constellations, the solar system, star identification and how stars evolve will also be discussed. Observations will also in- stargazing. clude the moon, any visible planets, and oth- er astrophysical objects. A great deal of time will be spent becoming familiar with and using the Observatory’s three tele- scopes, which includes the 14-inch Cele- © stron, permanently mounted in the five-me- ter Ash Dome, along with two eight-inch portable telescopes. The Friedman Observa- tory, which opened in early 1990, stands 24 feet tall.
