Colorectal cancer is the nation's second leading cancer killer, but over 90 percent is preventable. Colorectal cancer develops from polyps found on the lining of the colon and rectum. Removing these polyps can prevent colorectal cancer from ever occurring. Colorectal cancer is a highly treatable disease, and can be detected early through screening. Common screening tests for colorectal cancer include a fecal occult blood test, colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and double contrast barium enema. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Men and women aged 50 and older should be screened regularly. For more information, call the Cancer Institute or your doctor today.
