For much of the 1800’s, Lake Carey was devoted to farming and lumbering. All that changed, however, when the Montrose RR began service between Tunkhannock and Montrose in 1874. That year, Dan Carey cleared a grove fro picnics beside his farm house near the new station and the Stevens family began to take in boarders. Soon two hotels were in operation. | By the 1890’s, Lake Carey was a popular resort. Two trains ran daily from Tunkhannock and the paddlewheeler “Empress of the Lake” offered trips around the lake for a dime. Visitors flocked to the picnic grounds on the west shore, where a dance pavilion, photography studio and rowboat rental helped draw the crowds. At the northern end, the Civil War veterans and Grangers held their annual picnics in Wrigley’s Grove. The Fern Cliff and Spring Grove hotels offered food and lodging year-round to visitors from up and down the east coast. Sixty-eight summer cottages ringed the lake, known then as now for its superb fishing. As the automobile replaced the railroad, the lake’s hotels declined. But Lake Carey remained popular as a place to fish, go dancing, or rent a cottage. Here at Cooper’s Corners, a dance pavilion was added to the general store. In 1998, Marge and Alice acquired the business and soon re-established the Inn’s reputation for fine food and hospitality, with banquet facilities up to 120. 3 miles from Tunkhannock on beautiful Lake Carey off Rt. 29 North OPEN 7 DAYS - 836-2200 Sun.-Thurs. 11-9; Fri. & Sat. 11-10 Win a *35 Gift Certificate to: 1.aKe ( ) Just fill out this entry and mail or deliver to: The Dallas Post Dining Guide: 607 Main Road, Dallas, PA 18612 One winner will be drawn each week.
