RAUB Special to The Dallas Post PLYMOUTH — Matt Wilson, Bob Zaruta and Dan Wilson all came off the bench to score seven fourth-quarter points collectively, leading the foul- troubled Mountaineers to a 65-56 victo- ry against Wyoming Valley West in the championship game of the 20th Annual Dr. Robert M. Crossin Memorial Bas- ketball Tournament. “Our kids that came off the bench did it for us,” McCue said. “We have not used that lineup ever, but I now feel comfortable with using it throughout the season.” Northwest defeated Lake-Lehman 35- 33 in the consolation game. Valley West took a 6-2 lead early in the first quarter, but the Mountaineers went on a 13-4 run to make it a 15-10 game. The Spartans regained the lead late in the first half with two free throws by Brian Mattes to make it 22-21, but @ ron -Simonitis «and Paul McCue each hit baskets to give the Moun- taineers a 28-22 lead right before the half. Dallas held the lead until early in the fourth quarter when Chris Sipsky hit a bucket to close the gap to 44-41, but with Suppon and Simonitis back in the game, the Mountaineers shut down the Valley West offense and went on for the win. Simonitis led Dallas with 14 points, Suppon added 13 and Mulhern had 12. & Lake-Lehman's Jared Sadowski, Si- monitis, Suppon and ‘Mountaineer teammate Blake Saba were named to the all-tournament team, with Simoni- tis named tournament Most Valuable Player. Dallas had beaten Lake-Lehman 57- 36 Thursday to advance to the finals. Simonitis scored 22 points in that game - ‘and Suppon had 16. Joe Walko led Lehman with 16 points and Jared Sadowski chipped in with nine. Northwest Area 35, Lake-Lehman 33 Keith Mazonkey scored a game-high 13 points to lead Northwest Area past Lake-Lehman in the consolation game. WILCOX/FOR THE DALLAS POST Lake-Lehman finishes 2nd at Tunkhannock The Lake-Lehman Black Knights gave up an 11.5 point leading going into the final round, and finished second to Wyalusing at the Tukhannock Kiwanis Wrestling Tournament. Lehman finished with 200.5 points, Wyalusing, the six-time defending champions, scored 207. Heavyweight Matt Carey won a 5-1 decision in Saturday's finals, to be the only Lehman winner. John Houssock (112) and Matt Dragon (130), lost their final bouts and finished second. Kelby Morgan (103), Aaron Kubasik (119), Jeremy Schutz (135), Willie Weber (152) and Ed Becker (189) won third place in their weight categories, with Joh Schutz finishing fourth at 125. Lehman girls cruise at Trail Lake-Lehman pasted Lackawanna Trail 56-25 December 27 in a non-league game played at Trail. Danielle Kern led all scorers with 21 points as the Lady Knights jumped out to a 30-8 first quar- ter lead and never looked back. Later in the week, Lehman beat GAR 40- 27, with Kern again the leading scorer with 14. Jackie Paul had seven and Lisa Wasser, right, scored six. Mounts’ ‘Fab Five’ pace win at Munley By KELLY CARR Special to The Dallas Post WRIGHT TWP. - Five Dallas sopho- more starters, who have been playing together since the third grade, jelled to defeat Coughlin 69-32 and clinch the Munley Tourna- ment championship on Thursday. Mountaineers Ashley King, Meredith Lacey, Rosalyn Wentko, Jackie Hard- wick and Shannon Thomas began their careers together in the Dallas youth basketball program. As freshmen, they were the same five starters on last year's Dallas team, which finished 13- 12. “Everyone knew these girls were coming,” said Dallas coach Joe Noon. “We will see what they can do from here. Everyone on any given day can be beat. They still make some mistakes from immaturity.” Dallas, which defeated Crestwood EO EI “Everyone knew these girls were coming. Thomas, who was named the tourna- ment's most valuable player, finished the game with 15 points. Hardwick added a game-high 16 points, while Lacey had 15. Hardwick joined Thomas on the all-tournament team. “Shannon does it all. She is the hardest worker on the team,” said Noon, ; "She leads with her play. The girls all fall behind and back her.” Coughlin’s Kerri Buckman finished with a team-high nine points to lead the Crusaders, while Santina Vinciarel- li added seven. “Buckman is an outstanding play- er,” said Noon. "She has the best ath- letic ability I have ever seen in a girl. It is too bad it is her senior year.” Dallas K of C Youth Free Throw Championship All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2002 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Champi- onship. The local competition, spon- sored by Dallas Knights of Columbus Council 8224, will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, at 12:30 p.m. at Gate of Heaven Gymnasium, Machell Ave,, Dallas. This is an annual event with win- ners progressing through local, dis- trict and state competitions. All boys and girls, ages 10 to 14 are eligible to compete in their respective age divi- sions.
