Davies Sr., 81, of Dunnellon, Fla., formerly of the Sheatown section of Newport Township, and Dallas, died Mon- day Nov. 26, 2001 at Ocala Re- gional Medical Center, Ocala, Fla., where he was a patient for one day. Born March 9, 1918 in Ban- gor, he was a son of the late William and Lydia (Williams) Davis. He attended the Wilkes- Barre public schools and was a graduate of GAR High school. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the Con- struction Battalion in the Euro- pean Theater of operations. Fol- lowing his discharge from the military service, he worked at Vulcan Iron Works, Wilkes- Barre, and later for Air Products Corp., Hanover Township, until retiring. He was a member of Newport United Methodist Church, Alden, Newport Town- ship, Nanticoke Lodge 541, F & AM Caldwell Consistory, Valley of Bloomsburg, and Irem Temple AAONMS, Wilkes-Barre and Dal- las. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Reba Woomer; sisters, Alma Keeney, Arvona Memory and Marjorie Jones; and brothers, Winfield and William. Surviving are his second wife, the former Gertrude Williams; daughter, Judith Allen, Freder- ick, Md.; son, Harleth W. Davis Jr., Dallas; stepdaughter, Judith Gibson, Ocala; five grandchil- dren, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. GEORGE HESS U.S. Marine Corp veteran of World War II who received the Purple Heart George W. Hess, 83, of Upper Demunds Road, Dallas, died Thursday Dec. 13, 2001. Born in Dallas, he was a son of the late Charles F. and Mary (Graves) Hess. He was a gradu- ate of Kingston High School. He was an agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., Mil- waukee. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and re- ceived the Purple Heart for wounds received in the Battle of Sugar Loaf Hill in Okinawa, of which he was one of the few survivors. He wads a member of the Dallas United Methodist Church, where he held several offices. He also was a former Boy Scout leader, member of the Daddow Isaacs American Le- gion Post 672, Dallas, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Charles; and sisters, Amelia and Elizabeth Douglas and Ruth Long. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Louise Brace; sons, Clinton, Mechanicsburg; David, Gouldsboro; and Dou- glas, Conover, N.C; five grand- children, four great-grandchil- dren; and brother, Henry, Port Charlotte, Fla. Born March 13, 1920, he was a son of the late Charles W. and Jennie (Hess) Smith. He was a graduate of Beaumont High School and attended Wilkes University. He owned and oper- ated a school bus for 42 years. He and his brother, Carl, were partners in a dairy farm. He also owned a trucking business. He was a member of the Beaumont Union Gospel Church, where he was deacon for many years. He was a member of the Pennsylva- nia Farmers Association, Grange and the Beaumont Hunting Club. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Voters Hall of Fame and received a plaque to commemorate 50 years of con- tinuous voting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn.
