Approximately 80 students form grades 4-8 participated in the competition. After an intense hour of questions dealing with continents, countries, states, cities, and overall cultural and physical geography, competitors were narrowed to 12 students who made the semi-final round of “Traveling across America”: Bryan McLaughlin, Allison Baur, Conor Harrington, Thomas Horn, Zachary Wallick, Regina Martin, Casey Harrington, Casey Hampsey, Laura Nieman, Erick Perez, Christopher Taylor, and Aaron Cusma. The contest went back and forth between eighth grader Lau- ra Nieman and seventh grader Bryan McLaughlin in “The State Nicknames” final round until Miss Nieman answered two suc- cessive questions correctly: the state of Kansas as “The Sun- flower State” and Florida nick- named “The Sunshine State.” Af- ter being presented with the win- ning plaque by principal Mary C.
