THE DALLAS POST The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Thursday, December 6, 2001 9 _. Sports Meyers claims tight win over e Mounts in season opener WILKES-BARRE — Meyers edged the Mountaineers, 64-60, in a season- opening contest between many ob- servers’ favorites to win Wyoming Val- ley Conference Division II and III. The defending D-III champions liter- & ally had a tall task ahead of them in the form of the Mountaineers’ 6-6 cen- ter John Simonitis and 6-6 power for- ward Chuck Suppon. Both players ex- celled — Suppon scored 16 points and Simonitis added 13 and 13 rebounds — but the Mohawks kept them on the bench because of foul trouble down the stretch and compensated with a © well-balanced offensive attack. The Mohawks biggest player, 6-3 center Chris Cresci, played a key role as well, scoring 12 points and notching two key blocks. Teammate Scott Mudzik put up a game-high 17, Mickey Dudish scored 13 and Ken Kruk had 12. Blake Saba added 11 for Dallas. A Cresci layup gave the Mohawks a 55-53 lead with less than four minutes left in the game. Dallas never took the lead, but the Mountaineers made it in- ® cresting. Simonitis made two foul shots and added a layup to bring Dal- las within two points at the one- minute mark. After Suppon’s layup made it 60-59 Meyers, the senior fouled out and the momentum seemed to go Meyers’ way. Mudzik nailed both free throws for a 62-69 lead and Dallas had its last le- omate shot to tie the game when guard Paul McCue missed a shot with 1.2"seconds left. Meyers’ Chris Lauer came down with the rebound, drew a foul and made both shots to seal the victory. Dallas used a 12-0 third-quarter run to go up 49-45 before two Mudzik free throws eventually knotted it at 49. An- other key sequence occurred when Cresci blocked a shot, and on the en- suing fast break, Mudzik found Jared @Carol with a perfect behind-the-back pass, and Carol converted, giving the Mohawks a 53-51 lead with 5:26 left to play. by Michael Lello .
