The Back Mountain Memorial Li- brary has a new video, Saving Pennsylvania, that shows how Pennsylvanians can save their cities, towns, and countryside. The hour-long documentary © every other public library in the ™ state - by the Wyomissing Foun- dation as part of an effort to re- form Pennsylvania's land use policies. “During the past 50 years, nearly all Pennsylvania cities have lost population and vitali- ty, even as we've consumed mil- lions of acres of farmland and open space for sprawling devel- opment,” said David Thun, vice president of the Wyomissing Foundation. “Saving Pennsylva- nia shows that it doesn’t have to be this way. We can revitalize our cities and preserve our countryside at the same time.” Saving Pennsylvania originally aired on all Pennsylvania public television stations in the spring of 2000. The documentary, hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tom Hylton, shows how suburban sprawl came ‘about, shy it’s bad, and what we can do about it. Personal sto- ries, humorous graphics, and beautiful photography are used to keep the program clear and compelling. In 1998, a commission ap- pointed by the governor, the 21st Century Environment Commission, concluded that sprawl - random, low density, car-dependent development - is the greatest threat to Pennsyl- vania’s environment in the new century. The Wyomissing foundation is one of several philanthropies, such as the William Penn Foun- - dation and the Heinz Endow- ments, that are funding efforts to reinvest in our cities and pro- tect green space in the Com- monwealth.
