POST PHOTOS/SANDY PEOPLES Help available to pay energy bills PG Energy advises income-eli- gible customers, who own or rent, to seek payment assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LI- HEAP). LIHEAP is a federal fuel pro- gram that awards grants to in- come-eligible energy consumers for the payment of heating bills. Two types of grants are avail- able-cash grants and crisis grants. Under the cash grant, if eligible, the government will send a customer's utility or fuel com- pany a payment that is credited to his account. Depending on the customer's income, this grant may cover one, some or all of his energy bills during the heating season. Applications for the cash grant portion are available by - calling PG Energy at 1-888-829- 8611, or by visiting www.pgener- gy,com. Applications may also be obtained at local county assis- tance offices. Under the crisis grant portion of LIHEAP, if eligi- ble, additional money is available for customers experiencing emer- gency situations, such as those without utility service or those facing loss of service. In order to apply, you must provide proof of income for all family members, a recent PG En- ergy bill, and the names, birth dates and social security num- bers of all people in the house- hold. Unlike loans, these grants do not have to be paid back. Cus- tomers do not have to have an unpaid bill to receive a cash grant and they can receive assis- tance without being a welfare re- cipient; in addition, no lien is placed on a customer's property if a grant is received. Applica- tions for LIHEAP cash grants will be accepted between Nov. 13, 2001 and Jan. 31, 2002; the cri- sis grant portion of LIHEAP opened Nov. 13, and closes March 15, 2002.
