Paul Deeble and Jennifer Visger Toy adaption offered for kids with disabilities Allied Services Annual Holiday Toy Adaptation Program for area children with disabilities is a free community service offered November through January, and helps area children with disabili- ties enjoy all the toys they re- ceive as holiday gifts by making their toys more “user friendly.” Therapists and technicians at Allied’s Rehabilitation Hospital, Scranton, and John Heinz Insti- tute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Wilkes-Barre Twp. modify toys and offer advice to parents on which toys are best suited for their children’s special needs. Some of the modifications that have been performed on toys in- clude adding hook and eye strips for better grasping; at- taching dowels to enhance con- trol and adding supports to achieve leverage. Specially-de- signed switches and knobs allow children to activate toys and games more easily.
