Dallas may sue to recover WYW win Jd Player ruled ineligible is reinstated by PIAA By HEATHER B. JONES Post Staff DALLAS - The District 2 PIAA com- mittee ruled a Dallas football player is now eligible to be on the field, but that may not be the end of the story. The Dallas School District is current- ly in the process of deciding if it will also seek an appeal for the game Dallas forfeited due to the player's ineligibility, said Dr. Gilbert Griffiths, Dallas super- intendent. The player (whose name. has been withheld by the school) was found to be ineligible due to the number of semes- ters he has attended school since en-, rolling in ninth grade. According to PIAA eligibility requirements, students have eight semesters of athletic eligibili- ty starting in ninth grade. The player is currently in his ninth semester under those rules. Due to the student's extenuating cir-_ cumstances which involve foster home placements and transfers from a num- ber of different school programs, the PIAA is allowing him to play this sea- son. The PIAA ruling+on September 12, however, did not change the game Dal-_ las had to forfeit, a 14-0 win over Wyoming Valley West. “We're in the process of collecting at- torney names,” said Griffiths. He said he will meet with the school board this week to decide if the district will pro- ceed in the appeal process. Depending on the outcome of the rest of the football season, the forfeit could prevent the team from advancing to the post-season. Dallas not only lost the win, but the points which come with defeating Wyoming Valley West, a Class 4A school. Dallas forfeited 120 state points and 10 points toward for Class 3A subregional district playoffs for each WVW victory. Regardless of the next step for the district Griffiths said he was very pleased for the young man involved. “This is a great day for him,” Griffiths said regarding the PIAA ruling.
