The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, August 29, 2001 The Dallas Post — SportsWeek Local bowler strikes gold in Keystone Games Jd Bowling's a family affair for the Laskowskis By BETTY HINDS Post Correspondent HARVEYS LAKE - For the second year in a row, 15-year- old Samantha Laskowski of Har- veys Lake has bowled her way to gold. Competing in the Girls 15- 18 Handicap Bowling Division of the Keystone State Games, Samantha won her second con- secutive gold medal earlier this month. The Keystone State Games, Pennsylvania's largest amateur sports festival, was held in Johnstown from August 2-5. Over 7,000 athletes competed in more than 30 different varieties of sports during this 20th annu- al event. The Games are open to all amateur athletes. As a 2001 medal winner, Samantha is now eligible to par- ticipate in the national “State Games of America” of 2003 to be held in Connecticut. Last year’s gold medal finish enabled Samantha to bowl at " RA this year’s national competition which was held in St. Louis, Missouri from August. 11-12. Samantha finished 22nd in this more difficult competition against bowlers from across the country. Samantha loved the ex- perience of traveling to St. Louis. “We did a lot of sightsee- ing. I especially enjoyed going up in the arch,” she said. Samantha’s entire family par- ticipated in the last two Key- stone Games, and her mother, Karen Laskowski, also qualified for this year’s “State Games of America” in St. Louis. Samantha said, “It's fun to compete as a family. BMT students are key for King’s volleyball Two Back Mountain players will have key roles as the King's College women’s volleyball team attempts to build on an out- standing 2000 season. A year ago, the team posted a 34-3 record, winning the MAC Freedom Conference champi- onship, and earning a berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament. With the return of five starters and nine key play- ers from that squad, the Lady Monarchs are hoping to claim another championship season under the guidance of 2000 MAC Freedom ‘Coach of the Year’ Bernie Kachinko. Returning this year is 59” ju- nior outside hitter Faith O'Dell from Dallas who serves as the team’s fiery emotional leader. Af- ter transferring in from Division II Clarion University, O'Dell be- came a first-team MAC Freedom all-star a year ago and finished second behind Baffone for league MVP honors. An out- standing all-around player, O'Dell posted a team-high 407 kills, 426 digs, and 51 aces. Junior Tara Holly of Dallas stands as one of the team’s key players as she serves a number of roles, ranging from middle hitter to back row and has been outstanding as a utility player. The 57” junior contributed 76 kills and 154 digs last season but is expected to see increased time on the front line this sea- son.
