BMT National 7, St. Therese’s 1 Ryan Konopki's stellar pitching shut down the St. Therese’s offense, allowing Back Mountain National to post a 7-1 second-round victory in the District 16 Tournament. Konopki skillfully mixed his fastball and changeup and main- tained excellent control throughout his complete game victory. He fanned nine batters while surrendering only five hits. National jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with some help from St. Therese’s defense. With two out, Jon Janerich reached base on an error. Dylan Seeley followed with a walk. Konopki then reached on an error, with Janerich scoring. Brendan Delaney de- livered a two-run single, driving home Seeley and Konopki. National added to its lead with two runs in the second inning. Jeff Clemente led off with a single and ad- vanced to second on a passed ball. With one out, Janerich smacked an RBI single, the first of his two hits, to plate Clemente. Seeley drove home Janerich with a double into the gap in left-centerfield. St. Therese’s scored their lone run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by John Melczynski. National expanded its lead with two more runs in the fifth inning. Delaney led off with a double to left and scored on an RBI single by Greg Harris. Har- ris later scored on an RBI grounder by Mike Stolarick. Plymouth 3, BMT National 2 Evan Robaczewski's ‘single drove home the winning run in the sixth in- ning, allowing Plymouth to eliminate Back Mountain National from the Dis- trict 16 Tournament. National took the lead in the top half of the first inning on a two-out home run over the centerfield fence by pitch- er Dylan Seeley. Plymouth tied the score in the bottom half of the inning on a Robaczewski single, a Josh Reese double and a wild pitch. Reese also singled later in the contest. National regained the lead with a run in the third inning. Seeley led off with an infield single and , with two out, scored on a clutch RBI single to center by Ryan Konopki. Indians win Senior League title History was made on July 3, when the Back Mountain Senior Indians won the District 16 Se- nior League Championship on Tuesday night at the Coal Street Teener Field. Back Mountain Senior Indians defeated Heights No. 1 in game two in the best of three with a fi- nal save 11-3. On Monday night, in one of the hardest fought games of the season, the Indians pulled out a much needed win with a final score 7-6. Back Mountain Se- nior Indians posted a perfect 16- 0 record for the season. This year’s graduating players are: Jason Alfano, Brian Cor- nia, Jeff Dickson, Mike Fehlinger, Ryan Gryskevicz and Steve Salavantis. BACK MOUNTAIN BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Dylan Seeley blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth innin to give the Cardinals, the Back Moun- tain National playoff champions and reg- ular season co-champions, an 8-6 come- from-behind victory over the Yankees, the playoff champions of Back Mountain American. After Mike Stolarick shut out the Yan- kees ‘in the first two innings, the Cardi- nals reached Yankee hurler Cale Char- ney for a run in the bottom of the second on a Stolarick single, a Scott Henry dou- ble and RBI groundout by Chad Gelso. The Yankees responded with four third inning runs, featuring hits by Meyer Messinger, Eric Koval and Charney. The Cards closed the gap to 4-2 in the bot- tom of the third as the result of a Yankee eITor. After a leadoff single for the Yankees in the fourth, Seeley took the mound in relief of Stolarick. = Despite striking out the side in the inning, Seeley surren- dered a clutch two-run two-out single to Scott Skammer, one of Skammer’s three hits in the game. However, the fourth inning ‘marked the end of the Yankees’ scoring and the be- . ginning of the Cardinals’ comeback. In the bottom of the inning, the Cards closed the gap to 6-3 as Mark Covert singled home Gelso, who had singled to start the inning. The Cardinals scored two more runs strength of RBI singles by Henry and Gelso, who drove home Seeley, who had singled, and Stolarick, who had been hit by a pitch. Seeley followed with his shot over the centerfield fence that ended Back Mountain Baseball's 2001 major league season and marked the conclusion of a terrific Little League game of which both teams should be very proud.
