JONES Post Staff BACK MOUNTAIN - A well- rounded tennis player not only has powerful serves and back- hands, he also has to have a strong mental game. Four high school players from the Back Mountain know what it takes to play in State tennis competition and win. Jordan Koslosky, Shavertown; Eric Fe- instein, Shavertown; Neil “Bud- dy” Shah, Shavertown; and Tye Morris, Dallas, were members of the Wyoming Seminary PIAA Tennis 2001 State Champi- onship Team. “This was the first year they've had team states,” said Eric. Ear- ly on, the team’s goal for the season was to win the state competition. Sem had an impressive 2001 season on the road to winning States. The team won one of the biggest private school tourna- ments, which included 16 teams from seven states, at the New England Mid-Atlantic Tennis Tournament (NEMA). Winning NEMA was complete- ly unexpected. The players at- tribute the win to having a strong team with a variety of powerful players. “Our depth re- ally showed at that tourna- ment,” Buddy Shah said. The team won the District 2 championship and had a num- ber of successes at individual District 2 competition. Shah took first place in singles and Morris, playing with teammate Madhan Srinivasan, placed first in doubles. Jordan, Eric and Tye were sophomores this season. Shah was one of only two se- niors on this year’s team. The four have been playing tennis since about age 5 and tennis is serious business to them. They each play year-round individual- ly, but look forward to the begin- ning of March when high school team competition begins. Jordan agrees and said, “We already have confidence in our strokes, but a lot of kids will get tight in stressful situations and won't play to their potential. If you really concentrate and have confidence within yourself, you can save your game; you really need that.” “When you get to the State lev- See TENNIS, pg 10 O’s win 4 games in weeks action Orioles 6, A’s 5 Orioles pitcher Tom Parrish struck out three in 6 innings.
