JOSEPH SHURMAITIS
U.S. Army veteran of World War II
Joseph G. Shurmaitis, 81, of
RD 1, Harveys Lake, formerly of
Toms River, N.J., died Monday
at the Department of Veterans
Affairs Medical Center Nursing
Home, Plains Township.
Born in Stamford, Conn., he
was the son of the late Joseph
and Madel (Gripowitch) Shur-
maitis. He worked for 30 years
‘at the Ciba Geigy Chemical
Corp., Toms River. He owned
and operated Hilltop Inn, until
retiring.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of
World War II, serving in the
African and European Theater.
He toured with the Searchlight
Corps with the USO War Show.
He was a volunteer with the Pine
Beach Fire Co., Toms River, for

U.S. Army Veteran who received
the Purple Heart
Robert J. Ruggere, 53, of Car-
penter Road, Dallas Township,
died Wednesday at the Geisinger
Wyoming Valley Medical Center,
Plains Township.
Born in Luzerne, he was a son
of the late Anthony and Veronica
(Mullish) Ruggere. He attended
the Luzerne schools. He was a
U.S. Army veteran of the Vietham
War and received the Purple
Heart.
He was a member of George M.

well Consistory, Bloomsburg,
Shekinah Royal Arch Chapter, De

LCCC Nursing Forum participated in the annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake
Bowlathon at Stanton Lanes in W-B. The Bowlathon supported Big
Brothers/Big Sisters of the Bridge.

Vacation Bible school planned
Planning is underway for a Community Vacation Bible School spon-
sored by four Back Mt. churches; Shavertown United Methodist, St.
Paul’s Lutheran, Prince of Peace Episcopal, and Trinity Presbyter-
ian.
The theme for the event is ‘Jesus to the Rescue’ and will be held
August 13-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Trinity Presbyterian, Dallas. It
is free and open to everyone ages three to adult. Register at any of

Celebrate Heritage Sunda
in Trucksville
The Trucksville United Methodist Church will celebrate Heritage
Sunday on May 20 at 11 a.m. Rev. Wesley Crompton will join Rev.
Charles Naugle in the service and preach the sermon. Rev.
Crompton represents the third generation of his family to return to
the church for a special celebratory service.
Each year 50-year members are honored by the church. This
year’s class of inductees include Dr. William Bradbury, Alma
Brown, Rebecca Grey, Ray Metzgar Sr., Betty June Mathers, Nancy
mcDonald and Elsa Orchard. They join the more than 60 mem-
bers who have kept their membership in the church for more thargy
50 years.
